I know that fan fiction is frowned on, but what about writing in known universes?
I’m a long time BattleTech fan, and I’ve been kicking around an idea for my home group that I write for. With a couple of extra scenes it would be very appropriate for the Pink Orchid challenge. Just need to verify if it’s kosher to do so.

I don't think FanFic is an issue at all. What is frowned on here is taking another LitE authors work and using it without their permission. I'm sure others more knowledgeable than I will chime in, but I think you're fine.

A couple of years ago I inquired about posting a 24 chapter, 200k word HP fanfic set when the characters are in their late 20’s and was told ‘No fanfic.’
The problem there might have been that you aged up the characters. If they're known primarily for being younger than 18, that's a huge no-no.

The problem with HP erotic fanfics is that they necessarily have to "age up" the characters that are underage throughout the original story. In Lit, that's a no-no.

No citation, but I remember hearing that Laurel would accept or reject Celebs & Fan Fic submissions in part based on how litigious the celebrity or original author was. The no-aging-up rule wouldn't forbid, e.g., Snape/Dumbledore yaoi.

Edit: Sigh, I should do my research before posting instead of after. Here's a Snape/Narcissa (Malfoy) NC/R story: https://www.literotica.com/s/narcissas-slavery-ch-01

Write the story! If you are worried about it being sent to the Fan-Fic graveyard just put it in the category that fits and start with an author's note saying, "this is set in the Battletech Universe..."

I wrote one set in the Skyrim universe and included characters/locations from the game. But I just never mentioned the word Skyrim and I had no trouble getting it in in the fantasy category. Anyone who's played the game would recognize it though. Write your mech story and just leave out the Battletech word.

I've written several stories set in the Stargate SG1 universe, with only the main characters having cameos, but I never published them. It's hard to justify my time on something I can't sell anywhere, and I'm pretty sure my editor won't work for free on something we won't eventually publish for sale.

I have almost 1000 words of a story about Luke and Leia, set between Star Wars and Empire. Essentially in the same frame as Alan Dean Foster's "Splinter of the Mind's Eye". If I ever finish it, I'd probably try to get it published in I/T, even if neither character realises that they're related.

Harry Potter is specifically excluded, even using the characters in later works when they are older.

Indeed

RPG settings like BattleTech are made for story telling so go tell your story. You might want to avoid using canonical characters but a general story of a Jade Falcon-Steiner-Mercenary love triangle or what not isn't going to create any issues.

Her captor is in for a rough couple of months.

As others have mentioned, there is the fanfic category here, but IMO it's a bit of a wasteland.

You might have better luck using Battletech as an inspiration and using your own setting, even if it's basically Battletech with the serial numbers filed off. I don't think anyone would bat an eye at an 'original setting with mechs and clans inspired by Battletech. In fact I may have seen a few stories along those lines over the years here.

I've done similar stuff with a number of my own settings here, with heavy inspiration from stuff like Mass Effect, Westeros, and Baldur's Gate.

But we know they are!

Yes, Indeed...Kree, open the Chappa'ai. "You betcha, I'll open the Stargate so we can go in that place for your honor..."

My understanding is that Harry Potter, Simpsons, and Disney are all off-limits, even when all characters involved were adults in the source material.

This story is from 2014; it's possible that it got through before that rule was instituted.

We don't know that the site hasn't already been contacted by the copyright owners on particular properties.

Ironically, you can create your own underage characters, age them up in later chapters and present them in sexual situations.

Difference is though, your characters.

Plus, your own story has to do the heavy lifting - with fan-fic, that's been done for you, either by the original author or others writing in the same fan-fic universe. It's not necessarily lazy writing, but it is taking a short cut.

Then the issue isn't really the aging up, it's the copyright.
