I didn't answer RG because I agreed with him. Ethical considerations don't exactly trump self interest-- that depends on what the decision is that you need to make. Sometimes they run together in harness, other times there's a conflict. The way it works is that both ethics and egoism need to be consulted, along with reason, history, intuition. You oughtn't to be taking a decision with regard to just self-interest, or indeed, just any single thing. There is no single thing. Moralistic ideas based on single principles are just ideological fanaticisms. They're pretty much guaranteed to produce bad decisions. Nothing has only one yardstick by which to sanely measure it.
