She noticed the driver grinning at her in the mirror as the cab pulled away, leaving Andrew standing on the curb watching her. She felt her face flush and looked out the back window at the gangly boy shuffling thoughtfully back to his dorm.
"Where to?" the driver asked, and she rattled off her address as she took out her phone to check messages. She smiled, finding hte money he had slipped her. "So you going to see him again?"
"Him?" she said, looking up at the driver's eyes in the mirror.
"Who else? None of my business, I know, but when you click with someone like that, you don't want to let it go because of something stupid."
"Yeah, it really is none of your business," she said. "And I don't know if I'll see him or not." She looked at the texts, and saw she had a date for that night with a lawyer she had been with a couple of times before. She smiled to herself. All she had to do was act like he walked on water for a couple of hours at his club, and then for a few minutes in his hotel, and she'd be going home with a grand or more.
She got home and took a shower. The trouble was that she couldn't stop thinking about what the cab driver had said, about her clicking with Andrew. She had know exactly what he meant by it. When he had kissed her as she was getting into the cab, it had taken her off guard, and she had responded. She hadn't responded the way she usually did, by going through the motions, but she had honestly felt something.
"No you didn't," she told herself. She couldn't let herself go there. The last thing she needed was to end up trying to be a normal girl with a normal boyfriend. Even if she wanted it, she knew better than to think it could work. She looked at herself in the mirror. "Forget it," she said. "Forget him."
