Your strong suit

I had a reviewer state that one of my stories had a musical rhythm to the words. I found that interesting. I recorded myself reading it aloud. That's when I could detect what they were talking about. Kinda cool.

Trying out a new style of writing lately though.

I always do at least one read through of my stories aloud before I submit them. I have found that it helps with the rhythm and flow of the prose, with keeping the dialogue sounding natural and it allows me to find typos and other errors I have overlooked.

Yes! Reading through aloud is essential for finding errors, improving flow and dialogue. Having text-to-speech software like Balabolka read it too you helps too.

My strength is writing sentences that go on and on forever, never ending, until I nearly pass out from lack of oxygen, always wanting to add more and more information to make sure I adequately describe the picture I want to paint. Thank God for Grammarly.

Many many years ago, I took a course in creative writing. One of our assignments was to write a readable, well punctuated sentence of at least 500 words. I was awarded 'the prize'. But I still prefer short sentences. As you may have noticed. :)

I think I am able to write stupid characters pretty well.

For example, Debbie from my story 'Debbie the Dumb Gold Digger' is indeed as dumb as any girl you will ever meet. Todd, the fat bully from my 'PTA Queen Bee & Teen Rebel' lesbian sex stories is so stupid that he thinks about himself in the third person. Billy, Julie's not-so-secret admirer from 'April Leads Julie Astray' is not a bright young man, and his bumbling only increases tenfold when his crush Julie is around. Troy, the jock boyfriend from 'Body Swap With Sister's Boyfriend' may be good at sports but he is not intellectually gifted, thinking that the Titanic was a fictional ship from 'some like real old movie in the 90s.'

I have a longer sentence posted here. I could have gone on and on but...

And this is an earlier attempt:

How NOT to do it...

The roseate Sun, Phoebus’ orb, was glinting in the puddles and dappling the fallen leaves of the ancient forest as Joan made her way along the footpath leading from her rustic rose-entwined cottage, so beloved of tourists and her infrequent visitors from the city who left as soon as they reasonably could because the cottage lacked the basic amenities than any twenty-first century city dweller expected as of right such as satellite television and even running hot and cold water, both of which were unavailable, towards the steeple crowned hill on which the Parish Church sat as it had done for more than a thousand years surveying the expanding and contracting village in the valley beneath and perhaps regretting the earlier centuries when it had been filled to capacity by local residents each in their proper place and order according to the standards of the time, but Joan diverted from the direct route to the Church at a junction and was now heading in the direction of the Evening Star, the planet Venus known as Aphrodite to the Greeks but whether Greek or Roman was the personification of sexual desire, which sexual desire Joan was expecting to assuage once she reached her destination but in the meantime she was diverted by the interplay of light and shade from the evening sun as it sank lower on the horizon turning the landscape to a darkening ruddy hue which darkened further as she walked wondering whether she would reach her destination and assignation before Phoebus’ chariot had passed beyond her view but even if she did not her path was clear because she was accustomed to walking in the direction of the Evening Star every evening that she had free from her avocation of breeder of large and hairy dogs that bore a faint resemblance to The Hound of The Baskervilles and at times she would take one of the so-called breed with her on her perambulation which would certainly deter any evil minded loiterers upon her way but unfortunately also frequently prevented the consummation of her assignation by refusing to leave her side and repulsing her intended with ferocious barking and frenzied attacks barely held in check by the strong leash essential for such savage dogs but this time she was without a canine companion and therefore she hoped that the consummation would be forthcoming without let or hindrance as she continued to walk alongside the nearly dark woodlands before emerging on a slight eminence whence she could see her goal of another rose-entwined cottage from the chimney of which a wisp of smoke was arising promising warmth in both the physical, mental and sexual encounter which Joan would shortly enjoy.

"He's lit my fire" she said to herself.

PS. Ignoring the last short sentence which I couldn't resist:

I'm a solid technical writer and a fairly fast typist. It lets me get stories written quickly once I figure out what the story is. I've also been told my attention to detail is admirable.

Strong areas: Geography. Rhythm. Pulp plots. Adjectives.

I would say action and world building/setting. I tend to write sci-fi and fantasy, so unique worlds/settings and action are essential.

I also like writing dialogue. To me, it's one of the most important windows the reader looks through to understand my characters.

I’ve been told that I fairly do well with making things seem life-like. Also that I rarely describe people’s physical traits, leaving the reader to build their own mental image of the character.

I think I’m good at losing steam because I have more half-written stories than published ones.

ETA: And typos

I don't know yet what is my strong suit when it come to original works, as I barely posted any yet. But when it come to fanfictions and headcanons that I posted under another name, some of my Tumblr and Ao3 followers said that I'm good at keeping fictional characters close to the original, and that the personality traits, the way they act during sex, their kinks, etc. seem fitting with the characters.

About 15 years ago, I published a fanfic about my favourite Dynasty Warriors power couple, Sun Ce and Da Qiao, and people raved about how I kept them so in character, even when giving them new adventures to go on, so I hear ya there.

Actually, now that I think of it, I never did finish it. And it's around 900,000 words.

Oh, shit, I'd better see if I can continue it... XD

Did you just say 900,000 words!?

It's been mentioned multiple times, but I would go with dialogue as well. When I get compliments on a story it's usually for how well I write the back and forth between characters, very believable they tell me.

I think I have a good ear for how people speak and I like to think I can turn a phrase occasionally.

People also tell me I'm good at invoking emotion, which I think is a nice way of saying I know how to make people cry. I get comments all the time that readers find themselves crying when reading my stuff.

If my intention was making them sad then I guess I did my job. If they are crying at the comedies though I have to wonder :)

Good lord, man.

That's significantly more than the ENTIRE Lord of the Rings trilogy. I mean, WTF.

Have your characters die a quick and glorious death and have done with it.
