Dan

Dan had laid in his bed, on his belly, for three days; his only movement had been that initiated by those caring for him, under Sally's direction, in an attempt to prevent the blood clotting that sometimes killed immobile patients who otherwise would have survived their injuries.

He hadn't cracked his eyes once ... until now ... and first face ... he saw ... was ... familiar ...

He saw her notice him, saw her lean in a bit, smile. And ... barely audible ... barely intelligible ... he spoke his first words since a sniper more than 300 yards away had put a bullet through his spleen...

"Hey ... pencil girl ..."

Dan: Awake ... again, or still?

Pencil girl ...

I wasn't certain whether I had said it ... or just thought it. I wasn't really even sure I'd seen her. And if I had why was she here?

I cracked my eyes again, finding myself alone. I had imagined her after all. Pain...

I remember ... Jacob. He ... fell, yeah, fell ... to the floor of the Gazebo. And then I heard the shot. It had to have been ... so far away. And then ...

... and then ...

... pencil girl.

I open my eyes again. Pencil Girl. Her name is ...

I can hear voices ... snippets of conversation ... but ... my eyes are heavy.

" ... no infection, thank god ... "

" ... seven days? Yes ... that worries ... "

And then my eyes are wide open ... and ... I can feel my own lips smile.

"Hey ... Pencil Girl. How are you?"

The water was cool and fresh. Made me think of the water tower that stored our supply; which made me think of the gazebo; which made me think of Jacob, dead beside me; which made me think of...

I looked into Pencil Girl's eyes, so bright green ...

What was I thinking ... ?

I looked her hard in the face and said, "Traitor.

Tes was outside Dan's 20x20 bedroom per Sally's request ... which had actually come by Dan's strained voice request.

Sally sat over Dan for just a few minutes, the returned to the unit's entrance, her expression grave. When Tes glanced to her for some indication of what was happening, Sally halted to say, with a wide smile, "If you don't tell him who you are soon, he's always going to know you as Pencil Girl. But not now. He needs to sleep."

The following day was rife with activity. The weapons -- hopefully as of them -- had been rounded up in a quiet manner and resecured in the armory; the building was being secured again, some said to prevent more intruders and restrict movement within the building.

There was a rumor of a traitor within the Community. Suspicions were high; fingers were being pointed; there had been fights.

Sally left Dan after checking his bandages and went to Tes, saying, "So ... go introduce yourself, but Tes ..." Her face hardened a bit. She started to speak, paused, then said, "You've heard of the Florence Nightingale effect ... right?

Dan

Tes was so absolutely ... cute. That wasn't the word I was really wanting to use; I wanted to use beautiful, sexy, exotic, even erotic; then I would remind myself that if I were four years younger I would still be twice her age.

She had this long, curly auburn hair that reached fully to her little perky breasts, and when she flipped it away from one side or pulled it back, my eyes were instantly draw to her tiny, little, ever-hard nipples ...

And then, invariably, Sally would either enter the unit for some kind of medical followup,or appear at the entrance -- for seemingly no reason but to eye me -- and catch me ogling Tes. Sally, she had this ... look that simply said I'm keeping an eye on you, you dirty old man.

I had never considered myself a dirty old man before. Not because I hadn't thought of much younger women; every man did, and if he told you he didn't, he was a liar. But never in the 30 plus years of my active sex life had I ever, both, had a yearning for such a significantly younger woman and actually had her -- seemingly -- undivided attention.

I think that was what was worrying Sally. Not only was I luxuriating in Tes's attention to me, but -- I was hoping -- she was actually showing me that attention out of her own desire to do so, not some responsibility to.

But ... we can all wish and dream ... and fantasize. I was sure that she was taking care of me because I reminded her of her dearly departed father ... or worse, grandfather.

The 4th Floor had been cleared of the others; the 3rd Floor access was again locked and alarmed; weapons had been rounded up; I was sleeping with a semi-automatic pistol and a sawed off shotgun ...

And, once more, I was the dreaded old "Master of the Keep".

I wasn't sure whether I liked it this way; but I felt safer.

The traitor had not yet been identified; there were some weapons missing; and I didn't have anyone I could trust. Well ... that's not true.

I would always trust Sally, of course. Even if she was hovering over me with a huge steak knife, I would still have full trust in her -- and presume there was some medical reason for her preparing to plunge the blade into my chest.

I trusted her enough to trust her trust in others, as well.

There were people downstairs who'd risked their lives to safe the rest of us, and Sally was putting her faith in them; so, I put my faith in her and created a sort of police force. I'd allowed side arms to be assigned to the cops, and allowed the lookouts access to the scoped deer rifles they used to sweep the area surrounding SecureStore.

On one of my very careful, very slow walks about the 4th Floor, I'd locked myself inside The Lair, then pulled the connections between the hidden unit cameras and the monitors. I wanted the lookouts to have access to the computers and cameras, but I really wasn't anxious to answer questions about spying on people while they slept ... or did what ever.

And then ... there was Tes.

For the first time today, we would be on the 4th Floor alone. I was growing very attached to her. I still hadn't been able to convince myself of whether she was seeing me as a sort of father figure ... or something else. It was becoming excruciating, not being able to express my feelings. She was ... so alluring. She was ... so young. And she was ... so important to me.

This was not a time to fuck things up. But I had decided: next time she was close, I was going to act.

The first thing to pop into my head was oh my god!

I turned away quickly, eager not to be seen as trying to get a look. I turned slowly -- twisting was still a bit hard for me -- then began hobbling back to my bed. By the time I reached it, I was fully hardened. I set the cane aside, checked back to make sure no one was there, and adjustedmyself within my boxers. Then, oh so carefully, I laid back down upon the bed.

And I waited ... for what I wasn't sure. I was certain I'd embarrassed her.

I couldn't go through with my plan now. I'd just seen her naked; how could I make a romantic play for her now? It was just going to be a kiss. To do so now, after I'd seen her ... oh my god ... seen her ...

She was perfect. Petite, smooth, fair skinned ...

Suddenly ... I was wishing I'd taken a better look.

I heard her coming. My body ached before I stood and went on to embarrass myself; and now my head hurt -- literally as well as figuratively.

I slouched back in the bed ... and pretended to be asleep.

Dan

I'd committed to making my move ... then saw her naked -- if only for a split second -- then changed my mind.

I'd then committed to waiting -- then, with her face so close to my own -- changed my mind. My god man ... act like one.

She was sitting on the edge of the bed, her knees toward the headboard, her right hip against my own, her face just inches away. I snatched her right arm just above the elbow -- I'd moved too quickly, startling her.

I looked into the bright green eyes ... and I slowly ... pulled ... her face ... to mine ...

Her lips were soft and sweet and warm ... and ...

Her eyes wer not just open, but wide open ... like she'd never been kissed before ... ever!

You fucking diry old man!

I separated us and relaxed my grip on her arm. Then I smiled, embarrassed. I whispered, "Sorry ... but ... I've been wanting to do that ... since the pencil.

And I laid back again.

And ... CUE Sally!

That was the first thought that came to my mind as this child-woman-- still wrapped in a towel, which was getting me wet, I ignored -- slid into bed with me.

Cue Sally, I could hear the Stage Manager from her Community Theater group calling.

Yep, a-n-y second now...

My god ... she was so warm. I mean, after the initial shock of her cool shoulders and arms wore away ... she was so warm ... and soft where soft was nice ... and firm where firm was --

Shit!

I lifted my right knee a bit, lifting the blankets to hide the gopher that was threatening to break ground above my groin.

Oh ... she felt to ... nice. Nice was a good word. It wasn't a sexual word. She ... felt ... nice. Of course that was the big head trying to ignore the little head, which was saying she felt like a warm, inviting, nearly-naked woman ... who had crawled into bed with you, man ... Jesus, how much more do you --

The Security Alarm deactivated at the 4th Floor stairwell and the door -- still damaged from the attack, now three weeks previous -- squealed open, then slammed shut.

And ... of course ... cue Sally ...!

Sally and Dan

Sally and Dan had been gone for nearly hours, most of it in the now-better-protected lookout station that had once been the gazebo below the roof top water tower

Sally and Tes had worked together to get Dan into a wheel chair, yet another of Dan's gleaned storage locker treasures, and the onto the small elevator for what she called a roll and a stroll Sally had insisted that Dan needed some air and some mobility; and after threatening to drag him out of the bed if he didn't accept to be helped out of it, Dan relented and thrust his arm reluctantly outward.

At the elevator, Tes hurried back for the pain pills and water bottle, then exited Dan's bedroom to see the elevator already heading upward. Sally's face, with that now-familiar physician's scowl, was looking down to Dan, and Dan's, with a spanked puppy look expression on it, was looking silently back to Tes.

"Jake, what are you doing here?"

Jacob turned by shuffling his feet, not twisting his body. The bullet that had penetrated him had been through the upper shoulder, but he was having some of the same mobility and flexibility problems Dan had with his lower abdomen wound. He smiled to Dan, then answered the approaching Sally with, "My job."

"No, Jake." Without so much as a by-your-leave, she began unbuttoning hit shirt. "Jobs pay money. Are you being paid?"

Jacob glanced past her to Dan; his expression bordered on embarrassing guilt.

Sally caught the look and quickly said, "Never mind. I don't really need to know what the two of you have worked up 'tween you."

She carefully pulled his shirt open, examined the bandaged, then -- for fun -- touched a finger tip directly to the wound.

"Hey!" Jacob exclaimed. "Every damn time!"

Sally laughed and begun buttoning him back up. "And yet it surprises you, every damn time."

"I can do that," he said, pulling the lapels of his shirt from her with feigned anger. He glanced to Dan -- himself chuckling -- and asked, "And you used to get naked with this mean thing? You know she carries a scalpel, right?"

Jacob made a slashing motion before his groin, a silent screaming expression filling his face.

"Hey!" Sally cut in. "Don't think he wouldn't have deserved it."

As he laughed loudly, Jacob slung the scoped rifle from his shoulder, flipped open the bolt, and displayed the loaded chamber to Sally; then he quickly slammed the bolt home, and held the rifle outward. When Sally only gave him a blank expression, he said knowingly, "Don't tell me you want me to stay up her for this?"

"For what?" Dan asked oblivious.

Again Jacob chuckled, forced the rifle into Sally's hands, then pulled the semi-automatic side arm from its holster, repeated the same it's loaded and ready to fire routine, shoved it back into the holster, and pulled the holster out and set it upon the picnic table where, weeks early, Dan and Sophie had almost had a nice dinner.

Jacob looked right into Sally's eyes, nodded a bit, then headed away, calling back to Dan, "She's got that you bought a WHAT without consulting me? look my wife used to give me.

Sally remained still until she head the security disengage, the door open and slam shut, and the security re-engage. She moved, closer to one of the tall legs of the fire suppression water tower, and stared out into the city.

Dan would normally have been concerned about Sally being up here -- about anyone being up her in midday. The snipers -- or sniper, singular, they would never know -- had nearly killed Dan and Jacob at night from at least 300, maybe 400 yards away; picking someone off a roof top in the daylight would have been a snap a couple of weeks ago.

But Jacob and the other official Lookouts had worked dozens of hours, hanging additional walls of the dark garden netting; they'd surrounded the gazebo with assorted debris, collected from throughout the building, to encase the gazebo in such a way that it was still possible to stand watch and see all of the city without making yourself a target but for the most highly of skilled snipers; and finally they'd hung ribbons made from stripped clothing and unusable bedding from all about the lower platform of the water tower, essentially hiding any and all movement in the gazebo or between it and the stairwell access.

Dan had been very impressed when Sally had brought him up for his first roll and stroll a few days earlier -- a little walk done while Mother Tes had been sacked out after watching Dan through one of his bad nights.

It was high noon -- if you could call the noon sun high in February -- and Sally stood in the dark shadows of one of the tower's legs, looking out upon the world that was. The fires, for the most part, had either burned themselves out or had been put out; Downtown Portland looked almost normal, if you didn't look to closely.

But, it wasn't normal; she knew that. Nothing was normal out there. And very little was normal in here either. But, she thought, as she turned around to Dan -- finding his gaze set upon her, expectantly -- there was one thing that was going to be normal in here, whether she had to get it in a rather unnormal way.

Dan tilted his head and -- knowing she was about to let him have it -- gave her the okay, honey, I screwed up expression that he'd shared with her often, especially in their last few months.

But, when she did let him have it, it wasn't anything close to what he'd been expecting to get. "She's a lovely girl, Dan ... and you can ... can ... be an honorable, loving, kind man ... when you want to be. And ... I wish the two of you all the happiness ..." She glanced around at the World That Was, and finished "...and luck in the world."
