OK you two. Here's about as good an explanation as you'll find. It's basically a heart attack on a roll, but delish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine_sandwich#Hoagie

There's a bit of dispute whether it originated in the Philadelphia or Chester shipyard.

A similar sandwich, the zep, was created nearby where I live. It's basically the same as a hoagie, but it doesn't have lettuce and tomato, and it's on a round roll instead of oblong.

As with the cheesesteak, the roll is important. It's why they can't be duplicated elsewhere. Popular theory is that the minerals (or God knows what else) in the local water supply create that special texture for the rolls.

Next week I'll tell you all about the stromboli. :)

Looks like I wouldn't need to eat for a week after that! I have heard of the "sub" but never heard it called a hoagie before, mind you every place has a different name for a sandwich....

I missed the discussion of Hoagies???? Darn...

Well good morning all.

How are you Irish?

Tired! Trying to de-clutter before Christmas and finishing some decorating .....how's you? :)

Busy, this time of year is always so busy (both professionally and personally).

But I really like Christmas, so it puts me in a good mood. Cheerful and upbeat!

I especially like cookies. :D
Oh yeah, and booze. Seems to flow generously this time of year.

Good for you. My inlaws beat Christmas into the ground for me.

Booze? That flows year round.

Subs are different. Basically any sandwich on an oblong roll can be a sub. A hoagie has specific ingredients.

Well, I do have some issues in that respect I suppose, but lately not so much.

I'm sorry to hear that though. I would hope that everyone would find something wonderful at this time of year...well, actually at any time of year.

And yeah, well the booze...pretty much all year round.

Thanksgiving means more to me than Christmas, but the spirit is the same. I try to keep that perspective, but it ain't easy when it's 24/7 365. And yes, I'm grateful for every day above ground.

So what are you saying LS? We drink too much? I'll drink to that! LOL! :D

booze isn't just for Christmas .... it's for life (or have I fked that up)

Subs are different.

never a truer word spoken in jest ...... ;)

It is going to get terribly cold here this weekend. I find myself with an acute craving for a yummy mummy to warm my tummy.
