🎵 Monthly Song Challenge 🎵

The original version was released in 1959, but there were several different versions recorded over the years. This version, with the full backing orchestra, was released in 1960.
So by that explanation, is every Grateful Dead song from the 1990s?

You picked a really bad example if you are trying to create precedent, heh. Talk to some Grateful Dead fans, and they can explain to you, in detail, why a bootleg recording of "China Cat Sunflower" made on June 21st is vastly different from the bootleg of "China Cat Sunflower" recorded on June 23rd. But to your question, absolutely "yes." A song recorded in the 1990s is different from one recorded in 1969, even when it is the same band. It isn't a reissue of the same recording of the same song, it is a different piece of music. That is my opinion as both a music lover and a musician, seeing it from both sides of the microphone.

Same thing with Bob Dylan. I have this theory that he doesn't write songs, he experiences ideas. Then every time he expresses those ideas, they come out differently. I don't think he's performed one song in the same way twice, ever.

Day 19: A song from the 70s

First of all, I have to thank @morelikeasong for decades week particularly and the song challenge in general. Had you asked me if I liked 70s music a year ago, I would've said not really. I've come to realize just how much 70s music I actually like because it's one of the hardest days to pick. I'm a disco baby and I hadn't even clocked it 😂 Thanks, Your Maj!

I heard the cover of this song first (I'll probably use it for the aughts) and I was so pleasantly surprised to hear the original recently. I love both versions equally 🥰

Cher - Take Me Home

I don't know the cover version.... *searches*

I love Cher. ❤️ And I agree, Decades Week is my fave.

I can tell you that from playing. What you are going through at the time, what you are feeling in the moment, and the interplay with others, both who you are playing with and the audience, are all variables that change how you play, how you feel it. Same with acting. Many variables.

And the time issue is a huge one. The Australian band The Angels (who had to change their name in the US to Angel City for legal reasons. The first live concert I ever went to. Love those guys) recorded a lovely rocking ballad that I will not name out of respect for Rule #1. It is a lovely, plaintive song about longing and loss. And when they play it live, the audience responds by singing "no way, get fucked, fuck off!" It is about the most Australian thing I can think of. Time changes everything, heh.

Much to my dismay because when I saw him live it was terrible 😭. Blowin in the wind is my favorite song of his and I couldn’t even tell he was doing that one until halfway through the song 🙃

I saw Bob Dylan and Van Morrison together, they were doing some duets and Van walked off in disgust at Dylans performance, but Vam Morrison's a grumpy fucker anyway 😆

My point, good sir, was that in this game some players think of a song, look up the discography info to find it was released in a different decade, and move on for with another choice. I’ve done it multiple times, including for at least one Tom Lehrer song. Other players might seek high and low for a later recording where the guitarist played a Gibson instead of a Fender.

I don't dislike Dylan, but I chose not to see him live because of his live performances. Sorry you had a bad experience with a song you love!

Okay. Not what I did, but: okay.

I play this game for fun. I have my own set of rules, ones I keep just for me. Because I am not completing against anyone else except myself.

Your name says 1968, but were you conceived that same year or the year before? 🤔 I don't know your birthdate and I also don't know if you were born exactly nine months after conception... but I will take your word for it that you have the date 1968 on your birth certificate.

(I am joking. I don't care. Just making fun.)

I was copywrited and released in 1968. While I’ve presented many different iterations of myself over the last 55 years, I can’t, for the life of me, convince the government to let me change the year on the birth certificate.

But are you the same today as you were in 1968? Or are you different version, yearly or even daily? Music is the same way. And when an iteration of that is captured, caught in time, it is different as well.
