🎵 Monthly Song Challenge 🎵

I've spoken at length before, about how I emigrated to Sweden as a child. For all it's flaws and imperfections, I have never felt unwelcome here. I have been allowed since day one to take part in all of the good, the bad, and the ugly. It's been one hell of a ride.

Patriotism is seen as something ugly here. It isn't "nice" to be proud of your land. We criticize, constantly, and rightfully. For Sweden is not perfect. But it's home. And it's beautiful.

Kent - Sverige (Sweden).

Sweden, Sweden, beloved friend
a Tiger in shame
I know how it feels
when seriousness has turned to a joke

Welcome, be welcome here
Whoever you are
Where ever you're from

(A Swedish Tiger is a wordplay slogan from WW2. Tiger means both "to be silent" and, well, the animal. A blue and yellow striped tiger was the mascot for the campaign to not sell our secrets to the Germans. A Tiger in shame is a heavy criticism against the current state of Sweden)

I love Kent, they were not really known in the UK... i have a tattoo inspired by lyrics to one of their songs... it hides behind my wristwatch where the skin is white.

There is also a tiger in Oslo.... i wonder if this comes from a similar source

Day 4: Your favorite patriotic song

Oh England, My Lionheart - Kate Bush
Tricky one as i am not hugely patriotic these days. Yes, i cheer for certain things, but care not for the flag waving crazies who clutter streets for footlall matches or royal occasions, my flag tends to be red white and green, not the usual colours.

Anyway, Ms Bush is a national treasure and this is from her early years when people weren't quite sure about her. it speaks of the past glory, which is what a lot of countries are about. It's ironic, maybe mocking, but also has that feeling of, yes, this is my country, for good or bad. I may not feel at home here, but i don't anywhere (well, maybe in that town in the arctic) but Kate's oddness also make this song very British. Oh, Peter Pan is in Kensington Gardens, not Park. In case you go looking for him.

I've spent very little time in Norway, so I didn't know that! Googled and found some references to a swegian tiger, but no idea if that's real or just satire 😅

They tried for shot while to expand beyond Sweden. After their first two very successful albums, the next two had alternate lyrics recorded in English but they were commercial flops, so they abandoned that and focused solely on Sweden. Which I'm so very happy for.

May I ask which song? I think I know each and every one by heart 😻

the song is Things She Said
"Behind my wristwatch
the skin is white
Behind my wristwatch
where winter hides"
Those are the english lyrics. From one of their "english" albums. They were a great pop/rock band.

Oh wow, I said I knew them all by heart but, not the English versions. I read through it and it's so very very different!

And I just realized I made you name drop a second song in this thread. @morelikeasong please don't punish the Orange for this, it was I who sirened them into it. I'm so sorry 😭

Day 4: Your favorite patriotic song
Does it have to be a patriotic song from our own country? A lot of patriotism here feels like it crossed over into jingoism and xenophobia. But I do enjoy patriotic songs from other countries. Like Australia's other national anthem, "Waltzing Matilda."

*Day 4: Your favorite patriotic song*

I haven't felt especially patriotic for quite some time, but after the SCOTUS decision this week I feel like mourning the country I used to know. This song has been in my head since Monday:

Happy (what used to be) Independence Day, America.

Day 1: A song for a morning walk

I'm gonna come back to this
Day 2: A song that mentions an animal you’d see at a zoo
Three Lions

Day 3: A song you like from a genre you don’t normally listen to

valeron - toren - from my recent holiday.

Day 4: Your favorite patriotic song

i could have gone with one from above, and there are others but I'm gonna go with Jerusalem.
