Erland Cooper - First Of The Tide
Reminds me of wandering on Brighton Beach after seeing him the night before, still slightly dizzy from a great gig and watching the waves rattle over the stones. Also memories of wandering among the Kittiwake colonies in Varanger Fjord, Norway... midnight sun, not sure what time it was as the birds called their own name and the "I'm awake" line was replaced in my head by "kittwake". Maybe that's where it came from.

It’s late in the evening here and I’m very tired and I’m guessing I will still be tired when I have to get up early tomorrow morning.

This was my first thought. And my second thought was “no, that’s a song an insane person listens to first thing in the morning”

That moment of waking, vacillating between memory and dream.

I love the original version, especially live, but this collaboration between Israel Nebeker and the Oregon Symphony's string quartet evokes staying -- trying to hold on to that moment.

Fun fact about my brain. Squeeze and Crowded House occupy adjacent memory locations and I often mix them up. I was looking for the song about coffee but saw this instead and like it’s morning vibe better anyway.
