"You don't have to explain anything to me." Joan said as she took off her boots, glancing up at Wake as he offered to get her anything that she needed. "A drink would be nice. Water."
She found him a very odd man, but one that was trying to make her at least feel comfortable around him. She had to give him credit for that. He wasn't like a typical cop who would have hauled her in the first moment that she told him about imaginary voices that she heard constantly.
As Wake stepped into the kitchen, Joan heard his phone ring. It made her suspicious for a moment, but she mentally told herself to calm down as she took a seat on his couch and looked around the space. He didn't have any photos of his wife up, which she found suspicious. He had to have his reasons, but she wasn't going to ask.
"Care to tell me why the chief is giving me a workload the size of Texas?" The voice came over the line the moment that Elli answered, the crime tech and Wake's friend, Amanda, instantly chewing his ass out. "He's got me combing through files that haven't seen the light of day in probably ten years. On top of that, I'm digging into the life of Joan Archer because he claims he needs to know. What the hell is going on, Elli?"
