That's always a problem with storytelling: finding the right balance between information and narration.A lot of the telling comes from trying to set up the story, showing all the details would take too much time and add nothing. So I wanted to get it out of the way there.
I only have 25 stories published here, so give this as much weight as you want to. But I think you have to earn the reader's interest before you ask them to engage. You need to give them something that they want to find out more about before they have the patience to sit through other stuff, the stuff that isn't happening now.
I also think that readers are willing - far more willing than we writers often think - to let enjoy an action scene without knowing what's going on in the background. Give them action, give them relatable characters, give them an exciting plot hook, and they'll happily trust you to explain it all later on, after the scene is resolved.
