I'm an older man, a lifetime athlete and I've never had a gay experience. I don't think of the curiosity in terms of the mechanism for it happening. I just think of it happening. Someone earlier in the thread talked about how idle whims like this won't happen unless things unfold to make it easy. I suspect I'm not alone in this. It would probably happen often if men knew how to make it easy.
For me, I think that means gradual, perhaps from online in text and pics, then to voice, then a meet after the inhibitions are beaten down by the other guy who is probably going to be Dominant and force it all to happen. Maybe this is cliche. It does occur to me that it could be another curious man just like me and we edge each other towards it.
No question, though, a lot of it is mood and how aroused one is. It's not the first sexual thing I think of, but I do think I could be made to think of it. There probably needs to be a process that is often successful.
