The sad thing about The Cup is the gradual invasion of Overseas horses. It is good for the cup, making it more an international event, however, the local content is lost more and more each year. The average punter recognises less and less horses. (not sure how many "cup Punters" actually follow the horses anyway, but we always hear the back stories - Arwon walking to Flemington from Nowra, the battler in the back blocks of bum-crack ville.)
However, good to see an Aussie horse take it out this year!
But, no , didn't have a punt.

I've only limited experience to draw from, but Magnetic Island is a favourite. A short ride from Townsville, but a completely separate feel (including many hidden beaches/bays).
