Here's a fine sepia illustration — held to the background by the text overlay. Nothing overpowers here, rather they complement each other.

Here's a nice one, though I still haven't figured out if it's possible to have illustration and text side by side on this thread as was posted. I'm guessing it was submitted as a word file. You can see the original through the link below.

Girl Indigo
by jthserra©

jthserra_girlindigo.jpg

Shattered glass sparkles
through a broken window
refracting reflections
into backlit hallways
deep, deep inside, flashing

strophic light, then dark.
A figure, a shape moves
into and out of shadow
a child, a woman reverberates
in silhouette.

Broken nail, broken heart
her hair, dyed jet black, fades
in heartbeats and tears.
She is here, she is now
screaming forever.

Dimensionless and expanding
beyond the edge of visible light
she hovers in her own luminescence
untouchable, yet yearning an embrace
she whispers, "I" and echoes.

Beyond a grasp colors fail
pastels wither and crimsons bleed
into neutral shades of gray
as she absorbs the sun
into her deepest indigo.

Now here's an illustrated piece with a clear, stark photo that still works. A less skilled artist would have had too much detail in the photo. The key is economy — in word and, in this case, in the illustration.

Now that's a thought — slept in her hand. I remember that sensation, especially when that hand later provided the wake up call.

Here's one from Linbido that, when I first glanced at it, I thought was insanely chaotic. Then, when I really took a close look at it, I found it easy to follow.

And for those who may have missed it, I've another illustrated poem by Linbido on the thread. She does have a creative mind.

Now here's elegant simplicity — both in word and illustration. Provides a jump-start for the imagination.

Some welcome cages, gilded or not, not knowing of their dependency on the efficacy of their keepers. And then there are the others, for whom no cages will ever suffice.

Part of the cathartic process following the events of 9/11. Personally I think the most effective would have been a single subdued photo with text overlay.

Goodbye, a re-vision

A time to remember,
and a time to forget
memory washing over us
but we dare not relent.

risia_91101.jpg

Pictures torn and battered,
photos old and loved
crying over memories
wondering when it's enough.

risia_91102.jpg

Lives are lived and lost
lives are changed forever
of course we go on
with love left to remember.

risia_91103.jpg

As tears will fall,
and as tears will heal
the pain is great and
our love is real.

A tribute to an important force in American bonsai art during the 50's and 60's.

Goshin

John Yoshio Naka (1915-2004)

His hands had bent the weathered bough
to form a tinge of forest might
from tiny trees in potted ground

and intimate a storied height
from silent art in juniper
to branch into the rising light.

Now his protecting spirit stirs
to nod its crown in final bow
this honored place, his heart’s reserve.

Here's one I overlooked — love that bachelor breakfast he fixes.

Al Pacino Breakfast
by The Mutt©

Sunday morning
After Saturday night,
I’m up at hint of dawn,
I’m up this early anyway
Six days
A week.

Jesus, give me space
On this radio dial,
Give me space
For just one broken heart.

Faucet water, heal me
Radio, sustain me
Al Pacino breakfast,
Sun Records
For my sins

Last night’s cheese and sausage
Curling on the cardboard
Grants me absolution frying
In my scambled eggs.

If it's romance you're looking for, try a helping of this little piece of romance.

it's raining
by neonurotic©

neonurotic_itsraining.jpg

I imagine you and I
in the pouring rain
lip locked
tongues collide

Against this kiss
your name's
whispered into mine

I breathe you
to release me

I've been waiting
all my life
~ and finally
it's raining

it would have made a good, somber slideshow as art type thing, dont youthink? too bad that feature isnt available. I found it very hard to look at, made me physically ill remembering.

A most excellent thought there, marie. Take advantage of the computer's capabilities and do it as a slideshow. Subdue each image then overlay text on each image — that ought to give it huge impact.

Now here's an image to upset your thinking.

Not sure if you know, but as I as recall she suffered from dislexia. I want to say that this is how words appeared on any page to her. Anyone else remember this or am I losing it?

Yup. I recall her explaining that she was dyslexic after this poem came out. She also discussed it in the interview she did on Lauren Hynde's site, No-Troy. Remember?

And for the record, I miss her and Ice. What a lovely couple and a couple of very gifted writers. :)

No, that's right. And severely so, due to no proper aid in early years.

I don't know if this was her experience of text though. She described it to me as "a barrier" to force herself through. Words don't dance around, they're thick mud she gets stuck in.

On the other hand, she's gifted with a keen visual sense - propotions, colors, the mechanics of eye sight - that surpasses many's. Which is what allows her to make a composition like this one possible. It seemed chaptic, but yet, when I started redaing, there was only one way to follow the words.

No blues or jazz, just a look at an era's icon. John and friends were more than just another boy band. Much more complexity in their music than first appears.

Is it lust or is it love? Can you tell the difference? Unlike a couple of poems near the top of this page that have rather stark photos, this one works with the illustration being subdued and somewhat out of focus. Enjoy.
