Are people assholes in the comments for no reason?

internet anonymity, low self-esteem, immaturity, too much free time, sense of unearned entitlement, low intelligence, are all variables as to why people act the way they do on the internet. not just on story comments, but every single platform where people can post any kind of comment anonymously, without their real name. they can be categorized into 1 or all of those variables. these people would never act this way in person for fear of crossing the wrong individual.

their thoughts and opinions are worthless.

I never commented on a story until I began writing. That’s because I wanted helpful comments so I could try and make my efforts better and it seemed only fitting I should reciprocate. I now usually comment on every story I read, which nowadays isn’t very many for various reasons, and try to make my comment constructive whether I’m praising the story or finding fault.

An interesting thing about the OP’s story is the following day, after the moron comment, another reader sprang to the OP’s defence. That’s something which has happened to me and no doubt to many other writers.

Arsehole comments are only ever made anonymously. There’s nothing you can do about it, not even respond because they’re anonymous, which is the whole point. Even if you do leave an answering comment they’ll never read it because they’ve already moved in to the next writer they want to insult.

Just continue writing what you want to write, stories you enjoy both writing and reading yourself, and hope you’ll find readers who also enjoy what you write. Arsehole comments are annoying but it’s not life or death. Literotica isn’t real life, it’s just fantasy.

There’s one exception to the arsehole comments are only made anonymously: Overcritical. He’ll burn you and use his name, but he has never written and posted a story here. (BTW-we know he’s a he from his comments.)

Delete them.

I'm sure I've still got a few bad ones on my stories but if you're anything like me, you've got to delete them. They destroyed me my first few stories. Granted the comments about editing were correct but the relish some people took in ripping me apart really hurt. That's why in my early days I would publish a story or two, then go dark for two or three years, publish, go dark. Fucking Trolls would kill my soul. (Or whatever I have there that fills that void.) I started deleting them. Because I couldn't go back and re-read them and be hurt by them again. Yes logically I know that there was a bad comment but I can't bath in it anymore and they don't win when I send their comments to hell where they should be.

But as Emirus already stated, we should all learn the lesson from this. I also try and comment on every story I read, or the ones I finish at least. Which is also not very often considering that I usually try and edit or write when I have the time. I never finish a "Not for Me" story because my time is too short and I'll bail if I'm not interested, so I always have a fairly positive comment to leave.

If I ever lose my urge to write maybe I'll lobby for and then volunteer to be a Comment Translation Officer. Where I read all the anonymous comments before their posted, then I can translate them. I'd change "fucking moron wrote it" to "I did not write this story so it didn't turn out like I wanted." Or if I'm feeling cheeky: "fucking moron wrote this comment" How great would that be? If they came back and saw their comment changed like that.

TLDR? Delete them and keep writing. If you read something comment how you'd want your story to be commented on.

I posted a story, saw it had a comment and got excited to read it. And, well...the comment in its entirety is: "fucking moron wrote it". Ouch! I know I am probably not in contention for a Nobel Prize any time soon, but that seemed a bit harsh. Is the story really that bad, or was that guy just an asshole?

Don’t dwell on it

Alternative take Greta’s stance and see if you can change your Username to ‘Fucking Moron’ :D

If you think about it, he's not actually using his name.
He's probably a writer here and doesn't want any revenge comments against his own stories so he created a separate account to do this.
So he's still commenting anonymously and using a name as a cover.

Ignore all trolls

There's a 99% chance the person leaving a nasty comment has never posted a story. I got one of these dumbass replies and ignored it when I realized the jerk was a long-time member with zero stories to his credit. People who mock or degrade your efforts are usually too cowardly to create something and put it out there.

For the most part I agree. But keep in mind there are authors who create alts to comment or post under so if they say something someone doesn't like their stories don't get bombed.

And some do it because they're petty bitter jealous authors who want to bash and trash other people's stories without them knowing who it is.

Some create them and comment on their own stories to fluff them and try to get people to read them.

Some people aren't just assholes, but sad assholes.
