Author tantrums

I'm not sure why you seem to cling to this belief. Anybody with a basic tech understanding of the internet can cast multiple votes. It's actually quite easy and I can prove this to you anytime you want

Multiple votes ... to the same story ... with one account?

Go ahead and prove it.

My pleasure :D . I'll PM you.

Your explanation is rather techy and while I'm sure people do use that workaround, most bombers are too lazy to do that. They will not do anything that takes more than the minute or so that their fit of rage lasts. Your tech explanation does not invalidate anything that I have said in this thread and does nothing to counter the argument that these people exist and behave the way that I have described.

It was never my intention to counter any of those convictions you have about AH people and bombing. We simply have different opinions about what the AH-regulars would resort to. I actually feel funny "defending" this community/non-community, considering how often I criticized it in the past. ;)

Well, multi-accounts aside, you can't bomb a story more than once.
This was the only assertion I intended to disprove and I believe I succeeded.

I guess it's time to share the last verses of "The Ballad of Stacnash".

From some reason, AwkwardlySet got on Stacnash's shit list. She started dropping occasional low votes to his stories. Just enough to drop them from their lofty perches. She was pretty blatant on the forums about what she was doing. AwkwardlySet appealed to Laurel, but didn't get much satisfaction. As it was only a few votes, Stacnash got away with it.

Around Christmas of 2023, it was revealed that I had used ~10 sentences from another author's story. I got dogpiled for it. In January, I decided to take a break from Literotica and pulled all of my stories. At that time, I assumed that I'd pursue other interests for at least a year. I've taken long breaks from writing before. But shortly after I pulled my stories, I got a great story idea, and then I got another great story idea a few months after that one. I had to write the stories to get them out of my head. And then I wanted to share them with the community I was drawing from when I wanted to get off.

So on Monday, 8/14/23, I returned to Literotica by publishing "Dad's Bowling Night With Mom". That story like most of my stories is long at 8 pages, and its rating initially followed the typical trend of my stories - start low and then steadily rise, typically hitting after a couple of days a rating where it stabilizes. It started at 4.56 and got up to 4.79. And then late Monday the rating started dropping sharply, which had never happened to one of my stories before. It dropped to 4.69 and then 4.67. Some votes apparently got swept, and it was back up to 4.73. Then the rating started dropping again, eventually hitting 4.61. After another apparent sweep, its rating was back up to 4.73. Fortunately, I recorded the votes and ratings several times during this odd behavior:

You’ve got a lot of nerve returning to the website to publish more stories.
.
It was one thing for you to plagiarise a far more talented author in JCMcNeilly, but the way you’ve refused to apologise for the theft, for months, shows what kind of character you are.
.
When you frantically engaged in damage control in the immediate aftermath of being discovered, you actually wanted other authors to forgive you on account of you being “a good writer”. Well, good writers don’t steal from one another because they understand the severity of such a cowardly act.
.
After your exile was cut short due to your ego demanding to be stroked, you’re back with more drivel like this. Having already banked 5,000 followers, everything you post will receive a strong rating by default. Most of them have no idea that you stole from someone more talented than you.
.
Best of luck if you ever take your dross to the paid sites, you’re going to need it. As for here? My friend just said it best. Eagle One, fox two!

Because of comment review, the comment probably was posted well after she made it. The comment could have been made before or during the bombing.

Apparently, it was Stacnash bombing the story. But as she was doing a lot of votes, Literotica took action against her. Her votes were swept away twice, and then she was given a permanent ban.

From what I've seen, Literotica is constantly sweeping votes. But the sweeping is at a level appropriate for the number of questionable votes. My guess is that the more someone bombs, the more likely their votes will be eventually swept away.

While I appreciate you speaking about these things, I need to correct you on some things you said. It wasn't just a few 1* votes being cast in my case. It was probably more than a hundred bombs per day while the bombing lasted. Laurel did step in at first by doing the sweeps but not so much later when it became much more lowkey.

Also, neither Stacnash nor anyone else, as far as I know, was ever banned story-side because of bombing or for any other reason. The ban was ever only forum-side unless I am very wrong in this. NTH should know this part better.

I understand that you and some others feel pissed off because of Stacnash's intentions with lists and rankings but we should all just ignore this and get along with our usual activities. Stacnash is not breaking any rules in doing what she's doing so that should suffice.

I mean, I could easily point out several major flaws in her approach but I would be doing exactly the thing I advised against. I'll say just one thing that easily puts those lists in a clear perspective. Some people here have alts. Some are well-known, some aren't. Unknowingly, Stacnash has put the same author in the five-star list under one penname, and in the one-star list under the author's second penname. It's hilarious of course and it says volumes by itself. So for the love of god let's stop here 😁

Sorry that I got my facts wrong. Stacnash did most of her attention-getting activity while I was taking a break from Literotica. When I came back, you were at the tail end of your relationship with her, and I misunderstood how long it had been going on and how bad it had been.

Having been dogpiled for doing what I felt was within the site rules, I am very opposed to people being nasty to someone who is doing something within the site rules. We are all just guests here.

My impression of Stacnash is that she's very passionate about some of the authors and stories on this site. And that somehow, she convinced herself that she's an expert on great writing. Part of my maturity as a writer was realizing that other writers can be very successful with what I consider bad writing. I have my audience who likes how I write, but there are other audiences who like how other authors write.

This was the only assertion I intended to disprove and I believe I succeeded.

Was it really? because you said this.

I'm not sure why you seem to cling to this belief.

In direct quoted response to this single line.

Well, multi-accounts aside, you can't bomb a story more than once.

The attitude of 'cling to this belief' insinuates that I have been beating some sort of dead horse. It's fairly difficult to say that specific phrase without an eyeroll, as much as I try to read it without assuming your tone. The problem is that that was the only instance that I had mentioned single accounts in this thread. So I it could hardly be considered 'clinging' nor any sort of dead horse. However, there have been other points regarding the possible rate and frequency of 1-bombers present in the AH that I have very much repeated many times in the thread.

So either you were yes indeed trying to disprove more of my assertions than just the techy claim, or you were trying to assert your geek knowledge and put me in my place as not-so-smart as you, as evidenced here ...

Anybody with a basic tech understanding of the internet can cast multiple votes.

Which says (not suggests nor insinuates, SAYS) that I have no basic understanding of how the internet works. I understand IPs and VPNs n shit at a basic level thank you very much. Look down on me all you want. None of that adds any meaningful discussion to the thread.

What does matter to the discussion is that either way, you did nothing to disprove my assertions and characterization based on first hand experience of story bombers, their methods, their psyche and their numbers and frequency in this very forum, regardless of how many accounts they may or may not use in doing so. All you did was nitpick some techy little side argument to attempt to take me down a peg. If that's what you have to do to feel smart, go right ahead.

This is not the first time you expressed this claim about voting and bombing and this is certainly not the first time that I said that it's possible and that I have tested it. Others have said so as well. But no matter what one says or how he says it, you will choose to interpret the words in the most negative way that feeds into your anger and belligerence, which then allows you to angrily double down on your claims and reject or belittle the evidence given.
You also keep painting things as if people are directly insulting you or attacking you personally when they express different opinions, finding some nuances in their words that don't exist and that no one else sees.
I am sorry to say it but you can't seem to function in any other way except in this permanent combative mode where you constantly angrily defend yourself from imaginary insults and attacks. I really don't want to be a part of that.
Over and out.

This is not the first time you expressed this claim about voting and bombing

Specifically about multiple votes from one account? Bullshit. I mean I can let this go but I can't let you calling me a liar go.

Links please, and no not some isolated eight month old link that no one including me remembers or cares about, which I doubt there are anyways.

Over and out.

You call me a liar and walk away from me, you're a coward.

This seems like the type of thread where its worth mentioning one of the worst cases of authors bombing others, but rather through their followers.

Years ago there was a I/T series "Conflicted" that dominated the top lists for a long time. 17 chapters and in general in my opinion it matched its status. It was a very good series. All of a sudden that author is getting hammered up and down that list dropping them down the list to be supplanted by another series. They complained, Laurel swept for them, his scores went up, down again, repeat. They got disgusted and pulled the series and posted it elsewhere. Couple other high ranked stories Colleen and something by Txtalltales were also getting smoked.

Not long after that, I had a little dust up with another taboo author-off forum, this was through personal correspondence, and I saw some of my stories taking hits. This author had a tumblr blog, I decided to go sign up and there they are telling their followers that their series should be number one and this author wasn't worthy of the list nor was this one, and this one ripped off one of his ideas and to go and bomb them.

To show what a soap opera this place is, that author had a falling out with their editor who helped them with the first 14 chapters of their story, and when someone left a comment about not liking something the author divulged the editor was 'rewriting" some of his work to make it better. After the falling out the series did notably go downhill, but when the editor published a couple of stories of their own that were well received, all of a sudden....you guessed it, the bombs rained down.

This level of d-baggery is on the extreme side, the point is, this shit happens and I'm not sure why people seem to deny it does. I've posted something here and have my exact words show up in a nasty comment.

Just accept that people suck and Lit is not exempt from said suckage.

Just ask the Cabin...oh, right, they're all gone now, here and in the case of all but one, the paid market as well, despite their claims they'd dominate both lit and amazon.

I may have it.

I am EXTREMELY pissed.

I write all my own work. I have now had three stories THAT I WROTE rejected as AI, one of them for a THIRD time. I am inclined just to remove all my stories (70 of them) from the site and stop writing here. I find it insulting that they would do that. I've just about had it.

I've been writing here for 18 yes, since 2006, and I like this site a lot. But I am tired of being subjected to such questionable treatment.

If I disappear soon, you'll know why.
There's definitely evidence of how pissed off you are :) I don't know any thing about AI rejection, but I hope the issue gets resolved.

I don't know about your stories, and you're certainly not the only author to report being mistakenly flagged as AI. I wish you luck in getting that issue sorted.

But your user "photo" does look AI-generated. I don't know if that's contributing to what's happening, but maybe?

Seconding this. There are several ways it can be done, though for obvious reasons Laurel's asked that we not disclose them here.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure any halfway decent coder could put together a script to 1-bomb the shit out of anyone. The trick woulnd't be getting that ratings to stick (at least for a while), but not getting your IP range banned or something similar.

I don't think Laurel does anything of the sort. Back when it was happening to me and some other authors I asked her directly about dealing with those who were behind it by banning their IPs and such but she just said that they would get tired eventually or something along those lines, and she kept doing the sweeps every day or two. That was of course before the AI mess started. Now, there's even less chance she would get involved in such a way.

Was that ever actually confirmed? I do recall AwkwardlySet talking about low votes and attributing them to SN, but I don't recall anything from her that I'd consider an admission of vote bombing.

Are you sure? My recollection was that Stacnash was banned from the forums not for voting shenanigans, but after being reported as an alt of Tilan's. (Which I don't think she was, but I believe the report was made in good faith by somebody who believed that.)

But it was a while back; if somebody wants to point me at the relevant posts I'm happy to take a look and cop it if I'm wrong.

EDIT: whoops, I see AwkwardlySet already addressed this one.

I can assure you from experience one bombing was the least of what that troll tries to do here.

Nothing was confirmed. Stacnash was just banned one day from the forums with no reason given by Laurel. We found out about the ban from a friend? (sockpuppet?) posting to the AH after the ban. At that time, some people (MediocreAuthor?) felt that Stacnash was banned because of too much shitposting on the forums. You have to do something seriously bad to get perma-banned, and, from what I've seen, the first punishment for too much shitposting is a vacation from the forums. I feel that given the timing of the attack, her history of launching attacks, the timing of her punishment, and the severity of the punishment, her getting a perma-ban for bombing my story makes the most sense. But it's only a guess.

My recollection is that she was believed (IMHO incorrectly) to be an alt for somebody who'd already gotten themselves banned after multiple warnings. That seems like all the explanation needed for a ban.

Eh, that seems like quite a leap IMHO.

I know Stacnash's behaviour on the forums was problematic. Even as somebody who got good reviews from her (and had some amicable DM conversation), I objected to her invoking me in "why [other author]'s stories suck" type discussions.

But I also think there was a certain degree of insider/outsider dynamic at play, and people got so mad about somebody who wasn't One Of Us giving negative reviews, that they ended up jumping at shadows. Story got bombed? Musta been Stacnash. Cow got sick? Rain on your wedding day? Stacnash again.

I'd advise against arguing this topic too much here. There are people here who did their best to relativize what Stacnash was doing and saying, even if it was very clear from the very start what was going on, and all of it because Stacnash was giving some of them glowing reviews and ingratiating herself with some of them. It was one more, perhaps the most blatant display of AH mentality - self-promotion and self-aggrandizement at all costs.
