Darkelf!! Im so glad you made it back and that you had a good time.

*sits down with the TimTams, grinning*

I have wanted one of these since forever. Really. Thank you! So, did you try out any new beers, from different places, or just stick to one?

Actually I found a new flavour of Tim Tam the other week, Mango. Haven't tried it yet.

Yep I tried a few beers then a few more and had a good chat to one of brewers about his unique blends whilst trying a few. Went to two breweries and one German pub. Was a bit too hot and humid to be sitting outside at the other beer places, however something for my next visit. Had a great time. Purchased one touristy item and a couple of things for myself including some interesting blends of fudge some with booze.

Would highly recommend a visit to Hahndorf for any tourist to Adelaide even if only for one day, really need two days to try everything and you can catch a bus from the city that drops you right on the main street. All the German touristy stuff I saw is actually made in Germany not China so was a bit pricey, but cheaper than flying to Germany to buy the stuff.

I love mango juice and coconut water, but I always have so much trouble getting one and getting that damn seed out. It's not better with a peach, I promise you. It's just something I have not mastered. From now on, I will buy it frozen. *stomps foot*

Fudge with booze? Now that DOES sound interesting! It sounds like you had a great time! I'm so glad. If I ever make it to Adelaide, I will make sure to get down to Hahndorf, too!

May be you just need some tips on how to eat a mango. I posted a "how to guide" on one of the threads if I find it I'll repost it here. There is one school of thought that says you need to get naked in a tub just so that the juices don't drip everywhere. However two simple tips. 1 - cut a slit in the end and squeeze the juice and pulp out. 2 - slice the sides so that you end up with two cheeks and a centre piece containing the seed, three pieces in all. Easier option, however the juices still run down your fingers. Another tip, put the mango in the fridge before you eat it. Especially nice on a hot day.

If you can find it, there is also mango pulp sold in cans. If you mix that with milk and throw in some ice and chill it in the fridge it makes for a cooling drink on a hot day.

Just realised you have this place. Thought I'd say hello :)
Hello, I am glad you found it! Please, make yourself at home.

I think the bathtub might work, or at least getting naked. And, it's definitely a two-person job! I tried slicing it on the sides and twisting to get the seed out. Yeah, that didn't work very well. Maybe I'll try cutting the bottom and squeezing. Or buying it already cut.

Hey twinkle toes

Sorry but I was smiling to myself at your attempts to get at the mango seed out. It's rather easy to get at the seed. If you slice both sides the seed is easy to get at. May be I should post some pics on how to do it as I just purchased a couple of mangoes today. I've also had to show people how to choose a sweet mango. All of these people have been buying mangoes for years and use the same technique as when purchasing avocados, i.e. to squeeze them which is not the right method. I also see people just pick them up and putting them in the bag like they were buying apples. I do have a chuckle to myself.

May be I shouldn't mention Lychees, cause if you're having trouble cutting into a mango, peeling a Lychee will be like solving Rubik's cube :D

Happy Australia Day, DarkElf!

A few pictures would be great, but I honestly just think mangos are evil. ;)

So how does one choose a sweet mango? I need to know this life hack!

You are just too funny...mangoes when they are sweet are the best thing. But they are a short lived fruit so they're on my shopping list each week of Summer.

The Australia Day thing brings up the discussion of what the indigenous people's call invasion day so apart from the party atmosphere there is a lot of passion to recognise the other side of that coin.

Lots of BBQ's get fired up today and dead animals are cooked. And nope no shrimps, we call them prawns and they don't go on the BBQ. Oh yes and lots of beer, not matter the weather. Nothing like your hand turning blue trying to find the right beer in the bottom of an ice slurry. We call coolers Eskys. Mainly a trade name.

Ask for More and I want to know how to tell they're sweet?

If you don't cook prawns on the bbq, where do they get cooked?

As how to pick a sweet mango. Simply smell it at the stem end. If you get a sweet smell then its ripe, if you don't then put it back or buy it and keep it a cool dark space like a cupboard for a few days. Not in the fridge otherwise it won't ripen it will just go off over time. Size has nothing to do with sweetness. So bigger isn't always better.

If you buy any with a green tinge, same thing as above keep them in the cupboard and they will ripen in a couple of days. Ideally they should be yellow with a tinge of red/pink. If they are all yellow then they are over ripe and won't last too long at home.

Given the price of mangoes you don't want to waste your money on the wrong choice.

The TV chefs are cooking them on BBQ's these days but that's with the shell and marinades. However doing that you still have to peel then and you end up eating the waste tract as well.

Most people just boil the raw ones till they turn pink, peel them then add some lemon. I prefer to have mine in a curry or rolled in some spices and fried but I clean them first. You can also batter and deep fry them. The prawn heads can be boiled and strained to make a nice sauce. Some people even deep fry those, not my preference.

Hi bfg, apologies for neglecting you recently, but I seem to be missing everyone at the moment. Will catch up soon, promise.

Hey twinkle toes,

Attached as promised are pics on how to cut into a mango so you can get at the seed. One image is a bit fuzzy, didn't realise till I put them on the PC. Still getting used to the camera on my tablet.

You will need a sharp knife, something like a steak knife is perfect.

As for eating the cheeks just bite into it and use your teeth and scrape the flesh into your mouth. Once again these TV chefs like to get fancy and cut hatch marks into it to make little squares then turn them inside out. Complete waste of time, just get stuck in.
