Bobsgirl!

People who work with textiles do so for different reasons. Take my mother for example. She is a quilter who is all about the traditional piecing of traditional patterns. She would HATE the quilts I've pictured above because she wouldn't consider them "real" patterns. She prefers her quilts to have an historic base or story.

I've been frustrated because that just doesn't work for me. While I appreciate the workmanship, to me that's a bit, well...boring.

Bluebie helped me realize at last year's International Quilt Festival that my inspiration comes from the color and how the different colors work together and against each other.

I'm happier now that I've discovered it's okay to be a non-traditional quilter. Yippee!

I admit I am more of a traditional quilter, but I'm excited to see the new patterns. Color is my big thing too, and I wish I was more educated about color theory. I do it by what I like. I can't draw worth a damn though, so I will never be into doing applique.

Ohhhhhhhhh. I was net-shopping last week and came across the CUTEST things for applique.

Apparently they laser cut fabric pieces now and you can buy all kinds of appliques already cut out. You can use that fuseable facing stuff, sew your 1/4" seam almost all the way around, turn them inside out and press them into place all ready for your stitching around the edges. There were butterflies and scottie dogs and Sunbonnet Sue and Sam and hearts and all kinds of things. They weren't very expensive either. I'll try to find the link for you.

I admire traditional work, and was in no way demeaning it. It becomes too "forced" when I do it myself.

Oh and that Hawaiian applique stuff? HOW DO THEY DO THAT? There's no way I'd ever be able to do that.

Well, the way I saw it explained, it looked like you fold and cut designs out of freezer paper, similar to cutting out paper snowflakes. Way too fussy for me, no thanks.

I failed Snowflake Cutting 101.

Some things are just better admired than attempted. And we'll just leave it at that! ;)

Well if the Birthday Girl ever makes it back in here, I've got to get her opinion on HOW TO cut these triangles.

I'm having a problem with my light-to-dark-with-color-change-progression:

Both versions of the quilt pattern I've shown are basically blah blah blah wtf blah  yadda yadda huh! blah blah omfgbbq blah blah bah blah blah wtf blah  yadda yadda huh! blah blah omfgbbq blah blah blah blah blah wtf blah  yadda yadda huh! blah blah omfgbbq blah blah another day.

Any other ideas around this?
I hve no idea what either of you are saying, and yet, I find it, strangely erotic.

That was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. *wipes tears* Thanks.

(let's just not let my kids see it okay? I'm sure that's what they hear when I try to talk to them!) ;)

Your quilts are gorgeous folks. I've done a couple (one full size and one wall hanging) many years ago as gifts. I also love collage and the idea of fabric collage is fascinating. Check out this artist:

http://www.fabriccollage.com/inventory2.htm
(I just Googled. I'm sure there are tons more)

I love mixed media. I guess it's a texture thing. To mix paper, fabric and other objects is so much fun and a sensual experience. I did a full moon piece and added bead work that turned out nice.

You are getting my creative juices flowing again. Thank you for the inspiration.

By the way the idea of a Lit quilting bee conjures up so many images that maybe I should leave to myself. ;)

I once had an idea of embellishing quilt squares with pieces of panties from Litsters -- you know, with the lacey and frilly bits?

Then there was the idea of appliquing the shapes of various male Litster's appendages.

Or maybe a combination of the two of them -- the panties surrounding the applique....

But then there was the problem: what would you DO with such a piece? Would you put it on display? Would you have to put it away when your mother came to visit?

These are weighty questions. *nods*

That is definitely some beautiful work. Thanks for sharing.

Have you ever seen or heard of "Watercolor Quilts" ???

Someone google up some pictures. I'm late for work and will check back later.

<evil grin> Maybe it could be a traveling display. Maybe someone will take it to the Euro Mansion Lit gathering and start a tradition:

Your ideas are fun but that means I would have to start buying something other than Bridget Jones panties for myself. Oh my, is that TMI about myself. ;)

You've hit on an idea that might make me willing to learn applique. Think what fun it would be to arrange 'em on a light box so you could trace them! Call me--I'd love to consult.

In future years...

"Here we have a hand appliqued quilt from the early 21st century. It's believed to have been used as a fertility symbol. Notice the concentric circles of phallus shaped symbols. There has been some speculation that the creator of this quilt was part of a society of sexual free-thinkers..."

May I sit down at the table?

I'm just getting going again after many years. I love to play with fabric - quilting/knitting/embroidery/applique. In fact, I'm renting a studio so that I can spread out and be certain that my kids won't step on my stuff. . .

I've always been interested in appliqued scrapbooks/storytelling quilts, tapestries and clothing. And honestly, it didn't occur to me to explore the erotic possibilities until I met you all. . . I'm going to have to think about this (what fun!)

My-o-my, so beautiful.

I love this pattern and the colors are so nicely coordinated. Very pretty.

Wow, I have never seen this pattern, it's very cool. Looks amazing.

I love these colors!

Ladies the talent and dedication to create these beautiful things fantastic. I bow in appreciation.

Hand made is the gold standard for everything -- my hands definitely are not close to any standard with this art.

I'm afraid I have to Bargello in here, now I know I may be showing some Bias, but trust me I'm Batting for the home team, but, all this talk of Basting and Binding has me Crocking a Fat Eighth, maybe even a Fat Quarter, who knew there was so much Bluework in the world of Quilting.
I'm resisting the urge to Stack and Whack my Flange whilst dreaming of Spray Basting a beautifull Clamshell, or perhaps Layering myself against the soft Tufting, running my fingers along the Seam, Meander through the soft Thangles and Tessellations of a deightful Quillow.

Just writing this has me on the Raw Edge, if only I wasn't such a Fussy Cut my Knotwork wouldn't be so hard, I can't hold back much longer and as much as I would like to Selvage some dignity the thought of Appliquéing my Wadding onto her Squishie Loft Pillow Tuck has me Ruching one out, I can feel the Seminole Serging.
Oh where is my Quilt Top, why has she Weft me, is it my Warp?
She used to do a wonderful Strip Set before Stuffing, and then we would indulge in a Quilt Sandwich.
Perhaps she knows my terrible Secret, I have an SITD.

Quoll's quintessentially quirky quixotic quilting quip.

OH MY! That is TERRIFIC!

With your permission, I'm going to print that out and frame it for my sewing room.

Simply amazing.

These are example patterns from the books I showed earlier in the thread. I want to try them all. (I am really taken by the reds too. Usually I'm a cool-color person but something about that one has really grabbed me.)

That's what I hear. I've been known to get in trouble with my big mouth. ;)

On occasion B has considered muzzling me.
