Actually, corn (mielie) is a staple part of the South African diet - and in Zimbabwe too. Don't know about anywhere else in Africa, but that was where I saw it all the time, and mieliepap (Maize meal porridge) is ubiquitous, easy to make and cheap. It's often referred to as Sadza in South Africa and you eat it for breakfast, lunch or dinner - you can buy if from street stalls in the townships too (which you don't go into if you're white but if you go in a police Kaspir like I got to go, it's fine). The mining company my dad was consulting for had a big subsidized cafeteria that did really cheap meals for their employees and it was basically a sort of buffet style help yourself but with two areas - one with "african" food for all the black employees and another with more european-style stuff for all the afrikaners and the odd rooinek like my dad. I used to get laughed at because I loved sadza and I always headed for the african buffet and got my sadza and some really spicy stew / sauce stuff.....yum!

As for why Africa needs food? LOL. Zimbabwe used to be the bread basket of Africa, 45 years ago. Now it's not. Take a guess. Even when I was there, yu could see. The European owned and run farms were green oasis. The tribal areas were grazed down to the dirt, totally barren, and subsistence farming only. It's like a line sometimes. Green one side, dirt the other. As those white own farmers got confiscated and handed over, no guesses as to what happened.

The same thing is happening in South Africa. There are so many factors at play, but IMHO a lot of it is cultural. In Zimbabwe they're been trying to get white farmers back....

There will never be justice for these kids under California's corrupt laws other than the fact that this dude killed himself. So other than offering a prayer for the fallen there isn't much to do. Feel the same about the Healthcare CEO who died. He died in New York who has zero laws at this point, not to mention he donated to kamala, so all I can do is offer a prayer.

We could show more restraint in our harsh words toward others and focus on acting more civically minded at our leadership levels. We could attempt and plead to tone down the rhetoric and anger toward people who are 'different' than we are in our society.

Asylum Officers and Asylum Reform: Today, there are approximately 1,000 Asylum Officers; the bipartisan Senate bill would add an additional 4,300.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): ICE detention facilities are currently over capacity. Today, ICE has approximately 40,000 detention beds. The bipartisan Senate agreement would increase detention beds to a total of 50,000.

Immigration Judges: Currently there is a backlog of over 2 million cases for immigration judges. Each asylum case generally takes 5 to 7 years to complete.
