What are the chances of injuring the breasts in light-medium SM play? Depends on what you mean by "injuring", i think.
Do you mean bruising?
Welting?
Making the skin red?
Stretching them out of shape temporarily? Permanently?
Are you talking about deep muscle bruising?
Deep tissue damage?
Some permanent kind of damage?
The succint answer to all those questions is that one may well come away from "normal" SM breast play, light to medium in intensity and "heaviness", with some skin reddening.
Additionally, there may be a bruise or two that show up sometime after the play, depending on what you've been doing. (Clothespins, for example, always leave bruises on my breasts.)
If you've been cropped, for example, on your breasts, there may well be a few welts, but those fade within a few hours, a day or so at the most. If you've been flogged with something that's light or spreads the stroke out onto more skin, the bruising will probably be correspondingly lighter than if your Dominant uses something small and heavy that deliveres all the force of the stroke in one small place on your breast - something like a tawse or a whip of any kind.
It takes a lot to truly damage breasts. It takes a long time of weighting them down with heavy stuff, for example, to stretch them out of shape or distort the nipples. It takes muchmore than i've ever had to do permanent damage to them. My breasts are normal in every way - and they've taken a lot over the years.
Of course, everyone;s body handles all of this differently. Pay attention to what you're feeling, before, during, and after you play. Try to assess anything that seems "different" about your breasts. If you don't like what's happening, stop for awhile and see if the changes are coming from something else, not your play.
All of this is only for our shared pleasure. If it makes you anxious, go play some other way. There;s too many ways to find pleasure in this whole huge sandbox to dothe stuff we don't like for whatever reason.

While it is important to be cautious, stop for a minute and think about your mammogram ladies. I can't imagine anything anything being more traumatic to your breasts than having them squeezed until they are flat. If a mammogram is safe, then most breast play is as well.
Monthly self-exams are the key and knowing what your normal breast tissue feels like. If you notice something that's "not right" have it checked by your doctor.
(I swear every doctor who has ever examined me has been a closet sadist. I bruised from the exam once more than i did from the surgery to remove the lump.)

Suggestions for the solo artist?
As one who currently walks the submissive SM path alone (no pity party sought), I must resort to self nipple play. I find that using a riding crop works well on my nipples. For heightened sensations, I clamp or clothespin my nipples first and then whip them with the crop while the clamps are still attached. There is such a variance between the minimal effort to swing the crop and the fiery sensation triggered in a clamped nipple that I can achieve the mental separation that is necessary to experience SM solo. Further intensity is generated by the placement of the clothespin--straight on, from below the nipple, from the side, etc.
I know that the experience comes nowhere near the "real thing," but it's all I've got right now.
