Bullshit Ratings

A word to the wise. If you think your story's score is unfair, you can request a sweep. I didn't know this was the case, I assumed you were reliant on the vagaries of Literotica's software. But, as I was perusing through the submissions FAQs, I saw that you could ask for your score to be checked.

I had been fairly disappointed with the score of one of my recent submissions, so I asked for the score to be checked, and it's now shot up and is the proud recipient of a red H (well, technically it's a white H in a red box, but you know what I mean).

This is what the FAQ section says:

If you see a story - yours or anothers - that has suspicious-looking voting patterns, please do use the REPORT THIS STORY feature to bring it to our attention and we will run a manual check as well. In the OTHER field, tell us to check the voting.

When you report suspicious voting this way, the system will send us a direct link to the story and make it much easier for us to check.

I had no idea!

I was delighted when eight 1’s were removed from a story without me asking. Particularly when a few weeks before I’d sent in a request for another story and nothing has ever happened. So sometimes the system works and sometimes it doesn’t. Keep your fingers crossed and hope justice prevails.

I was always a bit frustrated by the system. None of my stories ever seemed to budge, one way or another. It was only after I discovered you could request a sweep, that suddenly my score improved.

15 votes in a row and my score remained unchanged. Two new votes over night and it drops 0.01. Total votes 223, I had hoped by going for a more popular category the impact of 1 bombs would be less painful, but it's not.
I hope the trolls get enough satisfaction from doing that. Maybe I should take it as they hate the story that much they are desperate I never write again. Because I'm not totally sure what the point is other than that. 😔

For the past month, everything I've published has received a 1-star vote within the first few hours. Can't help feeling I've pissed someone off.

That's fairly standard. Don't worry about it, it all settles down after a while.

Yep, experienced that too. Something that really took some effort to make, dramatically down-rated by one- and two-star clicks. But actually that happened to the rest of the works published the same day by others in the same category as well, at the same time! - so, most probably one individual.
And what I saw in the previous days from fellow authors, just almost everything that is newly published - in any category - is given the dreaded one :( and now slowly recovering from more realistic ratings.
I don't know if there is somewhere someone really annoyed about just anything and too much time...

29*

It seems very rare, at the moment, to see more than one or two reds on any front page even when they get to the bottom. You can’t tell from the information given, or at least I don’t think so, the number of votes and if there are any ones or twos. But I’ve read stories in the two main categories I frequent and thought they were worth much more.

I’ve a story that came off the front page a few days ago. It was on 4.83 after 17 votes and then got hit by two 1’s. Hard to take even though it’s happened before. I’ve reported it but I’ve done that before and nothings happened so it’s just fingers crossed.

Although it can take a while. I went through the same process with another one of my stories, but it took a couple of promptings to finally upgrade the score.

Of course, you may just have a poor score and no amount of sweeps can help.

Back Door to Great Reads

I am new to Literotica and had similar frustrations locating stories that I preferred.
This system has proven quite successful: some of my favorite authors have posted their favorites. Using that as a guide and their favorites "favorites" has lead me to treasures. Perhaps these crazy days of covid inspired my search method.

I've also noticed that some of the comments are brutal. It occurred to me that these individuals are using words as weapons...ironic on this site of words, gifts from the writers.

Please realize there are many readers quietly, valuing the stories you share.

This point has just been reinforced to me. I have a story that was scoring at around 4.48. I was convinced it was under marked and asked for the score to be checked. Nothing changed for weeks and I assumed that either a) they couldn't be bothered to check or b) the score was accurate. Well, today the score shot up to 4.64. So patience is necessary.

I find your “look at the favourites of my favourites” interesting because it’s something I’ve done occasionally in the past but not so much since I began writing.

Your comment about some of the comments being brutal is correct but I would say they are in a small minority. One or two seem to do it deliberately but, in the main, I think those that comment do it with a sense of responsibility and diplomacy. Do unto others etc etc. Although my opinions are biased because I’m one of those who make comments although I only make comments on threads which interest me and where I think, in my opinion, I can make a worthwhile contribution. Although sometimes my sense of humour, not necessarily understood by others, gets the better of me. Sometimes comments seem to come straight from the writer’s ego.

When you say “please realise there are many readers valuing the stories you share” there is one thing I think all writer’s would agree on. We would like more readers to make comments on our stories, not so much for our ego, but because it’s helpful. It’s nice when a reader comments they liked the story but if they would say, in just a few words, the main reason they liked it that would be so helpful. The same applies for a reader who didn’t like the story. I know the star system exists to give some idea but it doesn’t replace, and can never replace, words.

Finally, thank you for taking the time to make a comment in Story Feedback. That’s why it’s here.
