Canada from Eh to Zed

Canadian Avalanche Rescue Cats

Once again, my country pioneers the way in rescue and safety! And people think cats aren't useful...pfffft.

Awww. As someone who's lived far from home on numerous occasions, I know how that feels.

Anything in particular you miss or just the general awesome Canuckness?

Bit of family, but mostly just home. Close but feeling far today...

Picked up with a bunch of other "definitions" that will show up in the Smiles thread later on, but I figured this thread was the best place for this:

Oh my! Thanks for the chuckle. Interestingly I was looking at a map of Canada this morning that showed the obesity rate by province. Keroin will not be surprised to hear that British Columbia was lowest with about 12%. Newfoundland and Labrador was the worst with about 25%. Ontario was about 15%. All based on 2007-2008 data.

Sir Winston have you been nominated an honorary Canuck yet?

Might as well be, living in the Dakotas...

We've been having a remarkably (and much remarked-upon) mild winter thus far. Until last night, only two small snows that lasted only a day or two on the ground, and a *lot* of days in mid- to high-forties, as well as a number in the fifties and even low sixties. Today's high: 24, with over a foot of snow drifted in some parts of the yard, ice on the roads, trees, cars and fence, winds of 25-30 mph, and gusts of 45-50 mph for a windchill factor of -3 to +5º (F). From the north, of course. I think winter was just "late" this year. I hope its stay is short. After spending the majority of my life in (much) warmer climes (Florida, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee), this stuff if foreign to me.

I would love to see stats on my little city here. Because if BC is 12% I'd bet Nelson is at about 8 or 9%, or less. Never ceases to amaze me when I walk through town.

But, yes, overall the Canadian obesity rate is climbing. Hell, the global obesity rate is climbing.

Sir Winston have you been nominated an honorary Canuck yet?

No, but he should be!

Sir Winston, by the power vested in me, by...me, I now pronounce you an Honourary Canuck with all the titles and privileges therein. Now go out and apologize to someone! (Please).

:D

This has been a shockingly mild winter by our standards too. Hardly any snow on the ground and...look...what's that bright shiny thing in the sky??! I have seen sailboats in the lake, even. In January!!!

Super mild here, too. In fact, today I saw folks driving with their car windows open. There's a rumor that winter will show up tomorrow, though. This is Yank Yankelson, reporting from South Ontario.

Bows down to your magnificence while I wait for Sir Winston's apology to know that he's up to the task of being an Honorary Canuck.

You're in Southern Ontario?! Do I need to call on Keroin's magnificence again?

I'm sorry. Excuse me. I was busy, and a bit tired, so I didn't get an apology in sooner.

By the way... I don't have to end every third sentence with "eh" now, do I?

I'm not really a Canadian; I just play one on internet tee vee. Sorry for the confusion; it won't happen again, I assure you. So sorry.

Only thing you're missing is the eh. :)

Keroin, think we have another worthy of being an Honorary Canuck here.

Very good. Now don't forget to apologize when someone bumps into you.

As for the 'eh'. Not every third sentence but you do have to throw them in every once in a while...like an after thought.

Her excellency the Official Lit Canadian Ambassador has been stricken with a cold and, thus, has been negligent with her duties. (She is too busy clearing that clam chowder-like substance out of her lungs and nose).

But without further ado...

I hereby grant Honourary Canuck Citizenship to midwestyankee...wear it with pride.

But not too much pride, that's just not our thing.

p.s. Sir Winston, your apologies are noted. Well done, eh!

Thank you, thank you. (Is this where I kiss your toque, eh?)

TMI! TMI! T M I!!

Hard limit, eh?
It gave me a whole 'nother visual for the word chowder.

I once had a friend who talked about lung cookies, when he was getting over a cough. I didn't care much for that visual, either.

To the newest honorary Canadians:

You have been appropriately greeted by Keroin from the West.

As a resident of Ontario (around which all things Canadian revolve) I too welcome you.

You have offered your unecessary apology and (almost) politely reminded posters of value of being understated.

The only thing remaining is to find a newfie and screech you in with the kissing of a cod and you will be free to make fun of Americans with us when they aren't paying attention. Eh.

So, what's really the deal with apologizing, if somebody bumps into you? Is it just a running joke or does it really happen in Canada?

Because I know that at least I apologize each and every time some bumps into me and I hadn't even realized I do it, until I started seeing it being mentioned here regularly. Actually my go-to reaction in those situations is something like "I'm sorry, it's ok", just in case the other person apologizes as well, which, by the way, doesn't always happen.

Actually not even 15 minutes ago, somebody stepped on my toes, when the bus changed lanes rather unexpectedly, and even then I apologized. They just smiled sort of apologetically.

I might have a slight problem with excessive apologizing, but admitting the problem is the first step.

You may have been Canadian in a previous life.

You may have been Canadian in a previous life.

I think if I actually were Canadian in a previous life, this time around I'd know better than to be born in Northern Europe and freeze my butt off during the winter. And fall. And spring. And sometimes summer.

Maybe you were a naughty Canadian, and this is your karma coming back at you.

That might be it. I probably found poutine repulsive even then and now I'm being punished. I have to try to be better this time and make sure I eat blood sausage and some other weird stuff at least every now and again, so that next time I'll get to live in a nice, moderate climate.
