corsets...sexy

That's not a proper corset, the way she's bending.

ETA: the one on the previous page, I mean.

OK, here's a question from a corset virgin:D! I'm trying to work my nerve up to buy my first corset, but am uncertain which would look better on my "plumpish" body type. I've seen the kind that are waist length and then the ones that are a bit longer, appearing to hit you along the hips. Do you have any opinions which would better fit a woman with very "womanly" hips? I can't afford a custom made one and am looking around on ebay at the moment.
Any constructive opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Ge one that fits you well along the hips. My wife has that kind and it looks AMAZING on her.

I love love love corsets. I just wish I was brave enough to wear them out in public!

Pair it with a peasant shirt and skirt and some boots, and you have a great ren faire outfit. Totally modern, but it has the feel and look and you won't be the only one.

Do the same thing with some big earrings and some scarves or sashes and you have a fancy dress/Halloween costume.

Until you are up for wearing them just because you want to, look for excuses or make them up. Its okay, really!

Think about how you want to use it, and where you want to wear it.
Is it going to be just for play, or are you expecting it to mix with your closet and be worn out? Most of my advice is really aimed at people who want to be able to wear them all day, or dance all night (though I have to say that belly dancing in a corset is almost impossible) or be able to do almost anything else they would do without it. I do historical costuming, and while you have to move a little differently, a well fitted corset will allow you do an amazing amount in comfort. And if you are very large busted, I've been told its more comfortable than a modern bra.

The ones that go down lower around the hips look amazing, but they are harder to wear under normal clothes and to move around in normally. I'm short waisted, and if I have anything that is cut longer than where the top of a string bikini bottom would ride, then I have issues with sitting down. If you want a longer one, then consider waiting until you have the money for a custom one so that you can make sure it will allow you do to what you want to do.

I'd say the most important issue is comfort, because if its not comfy then you aren't going to feel sexy. It'll be like those killer shoes that you only have to stand around in for five minutes, instead of a kick ass pair you could wear all night.

In general, the most flattering fit to go for on a corset (for skinny people and plump people) is to cup and lift the breasts, snug around the ribs and waist and then to flow out to the hips. You don't want lumps or bulges on the top or bottom, and especially not in the middle!!!

Don't choose anything too constrictive for your first corset--it should fit you as you are NOW, but there should be a bit of a gap (1-2") in the back, and it shouldn't lace closed. If it does lace close, then if you loose any weight it will be too big and it won't do its job.

Ren fairs and cons (depending on where you are) will probably have a chance to actually try one on. And those are usually VERY solidly constructed, and the people selling them have lots of experience tying people up. :D

Be very wary of buying one from Fredericks or Victorias Secret or whatever......if you actually expect it do anything and last more than 5-10 wearings then you'll be wasting your money.

Do I detect a tightlacer or corsetiere in our midst? Or just a hobbyist? Welcome to the thread bethpage!

Serious hobbyist. ;) And I've made all the cheap mistakes.

I've mostly worn them with historical costumes or for fancy dress, but I'm looking at doing it more often for body mod. I can't get my waist any smaller through exercise and diet at the moment....I don't want to be much smaller, just 3-4 inches. I would need a new one for that, though, and I don't want to buy online. Grr. Sigh.

Thanks for the welcome, Etoile!

Ah, sounds like you and I are in the same situation, I have mostly done it for body modification myself. Not lately though...I don't have one that fits, either! Still have lots of old ones but I haven't worn one in a while. I used to be very involved in the online tightlacing community though.

Any good links for that (tightlacing)? I've poked around a bit, but.....haven't really found anywhere to lurk that seemed to be what I wanted. Sigh. I'm so articulate today. :(

Whee!!! New corset for me!!!

I'm very, very excited. I'm getting a new corset, with steel boning and everything. It will work for regular wear, and has the right shape to go with some of my historical costumes!!!

And, its pretty! The shell is purple brocade with butterflies and turquoise trim.....so, so pretty.

Its cut a bit small in the waist, but I'm in the process of getting rid of some body fat, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem by the time I actually get it.

I'll post pics in April, after its really, really mine. (Yes, I'm bouncing.)

And Dreamliner, would I do the thing with the safety pins and lacing???? Hell fricking no.....there is no incentive enough to go there.

That's a rather nice corset piercing, I've seen some that are pretty dismal. My favorite is the cable one by circle23, here - may not be for the squeamish.
