Crate Training Puppies

one other thing that pooped into my head...

when you let them out of the crate, don't make a big deal out of it. just let them out and go about your business. it's best to pay little or no attention to them for about five or ten minutes after letting them out.

Another tip or two - EJ's tip also goes for when you leave the house and leave the puppy alone.....try not to make a big fuss over it, as that should help towards reducing their anxiousness of being left alone.

Toys - I've heard that so that dogs do not get over stimulated, it is best that they don't have more then 3 toys out at once - am not too sure about this one, but hey it sounds good.... :D

So I picked her up today!!! I promised pics...and I deliver. :)

Her name is Bella and she is just a hair over two months old.

Or Tease Too... TT.

I'm very happy for you Tease, it's so nice to have pets. They add a lot to our lives.

i agree with everyone else... she's positively adorable. :)

but am i the only one troubled by the fact that she seems to be tilting? this dog needs a front end alignment before she tips over.... or worse yet, spends her life walking in a circle.

AHHHHHHHHH she is soooo cute! I am so jealous........

Too bad you're not closer to Dallas - I would run over for a puppy fix.....

Awww, thanks everyone!

She has been fun. Of course this is only about hour 29 of having her. I've even taken her to school with me! Dang it, she sure sleeps a lot. I'm not sure if it is her way of dealing with the stress of being away from her litter mates and mother as well as a new environment or if I got lucky and have a mellow pup!

EJ, where does one take a 10 week old pup for an alignment? How much will that run me, like 1,000 milk bones? ;) She does seem to be circling a lot, I figured it was an adolescent thing.

Y'all can puppy sit or get a puppy fix whenever you'd like!

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions. :rose:

I feel kinda bad, she is spending a lot of time in her crate. I've been taking her to school the past two days. While I am teaching, she is in her crate. I take her out between classes to go to the bathroom and on my prep period I have her on a leash with the option of her going in her crate or out by me. She is usually at my feet or lounging in the crate.

While I have her home, I have her out with me on a leash (so she doesn't wander off and get into trouble). As she is becoming more used to the collar and leash, I am taking longer walks with her in the afternoon.

I feel bad for keeping her in her crate for so much of the day. I hope I'm not causing any type of puppy trauma to her as she is growing up. The last thing I want is for her to need psychotherapy because of something I did inadvertently during puppyhood. ;)

How long is too long to be in a crate - throughout the day?

as long as you (or someone) is letting her out to walk around and go to the bathroom every hour or so she should be ok like that for 8, 10, 12 hours. ideally, if you could find someone you trust to take care of her at home, that would be better just so she doesn't have this environmental change. it's not a big deal though... that's the point of the crate... it's like a puppy RV. :)

i wouldn't sweat it... i'm sure she's fine.

OK, I was just worried she is cooped up too long. I take her out roughly every hour and a half/two hours and she seems to be doing fine with it. She's just going to have to rough it with me going to school for a few months. At least until she is old enough to stay in a crate for a greater length of time.

I have two crates for her. One at home (wire one) and a canvas travel type one for my truck and in my office. I was concerned with the change of environment but, my life is kinda crazy so she might as well get used to it now.

Thanks for the help!! :)

*shrug* I saw it. For some reason, I thought it was intentional.

Actually PTM taking the puppy to all different kinds of places is a very good thing.

It helps socialize her into a dog that knows how to deal with different situations.

When I got my Ridgeback I took her EVERYWHERE.

Thanks Nb. I am hoping to make her well socialized. Looking into a puppy class locally as well. She does decently on heeling and sitting. Seems to be pretty intelligent *phew* :D

I don't mind taking her everywhere so much as that I am concerned she will be too used to going with me everywhere. How will she handle NOT going with me?
