Do you bargain?

I wouldn't say I'm much of a negotiator... but as the price goes up... and my interest in the item rises, then there is a small chance I'll negotiate. I think part of this has to do with the fact that the few times I have negotiated in the past, at yardsales no less, I've often been told no. I feel I am insulting people, especially if there is an established price. Am within 5 years one way or another of 30, if that helps, and I've never really seen /experienced much negotiation, aside from a few eposiodes of nanny tv shows.

Are you a negotiator? For things like yard sale items? Vehicles? How about for sex or in relationships?

If you're not a bargainer, why not?

Are you male or female and how old are you? (I'm trying to discern if there's a gender and/or generational difference.)

Is there anything in particular that makes you a negotiator (or not), like cultural background, watching certain family members, or certain experiences?

Do you have a good bargain story, like where you negotiated your ass off and/or just got a really awesome deal?[/QUOTE]

I bargain for things and services all the time, it is the nature of my business, I paint homes and residencial places for a living and the barter is always part of the dealing. I am a male 56 years old. I think I bargain or barter because thats what I saw when I was learning to paint, also as an independent contractor it is up to me to set the deal, there are no union rules or restrictions as to what I can charge or consider fair trade for my work. Probably the best story I can give you is that I was working for a family that I had know since high school, had dated this guys daughter and was now being asked to paint his Living room. So I said "hey Dr. would you consider my painting this area for you doing my Vasectomy" (sp)-I can paint better than I can spell- and he said for sure, turns out that it was a good deal when you consider the cost of a Vas theses days and the fact that it has lasted over 20 years and in that time I have painted his Living room 3 more times for money. He has not gotten to do another Vas on me for free however! ;) Here is another one I just remebered....I was working for a couple painting their kitchen and I asked them what they were going to do with the old range (kitchen aid convection hardly used being replaced by a Jenn-Air) they said probably give it to Good Will or Salvation army. So I said "well why don't you think about trading some of my services for it and tell me what you want tomorrow". Operating on the idea that the first liar does not stand a chance I let them set the exchange rate. I would have traded 3 days work for this range, it was in good shape and I love to cook so a convection oven was something I thought I would like. Looked it up on the internet and it was worth about $1500.00, next day they tell me they would trade me one days labor for the range ( about $200.00 )...I scratched my chin and said "Welllllllll I guess I could do that" and now I got that sucker and have had it for several years and it works great makes a loaf of bread cook up nice and brown and does pizza like you can't imagine! Okay thats all from me, we will see if there are any other folks with some thoughts or ideas on here.
