Do you miss porn magazines?

Yes. I miss porn magazines...but real hardcore porn and not the tame stuff like Playboy, Penthouse....or even Hustler.

My dad had a subscription to Playboy and, except when the grandparents (or pastor) came over, the most current issue was usually on the coffee table. A few back issues were usually inside the storage cabinets on a set of marble topped end tables. More back issues, and later some Penthouses as well, were in a box in dad's closet. Of course we weren't supposed to look at them but, with two working parents, who was going to stop us?

My folks, a pretty hot couple for their time, had a "sex manual" kept in a nightstand next to their bed. It was illustrated with detailed and accurate pen ink drawings of human genitalia and sex acts and positions. It even made mention of anal sex though, of course, between monogamous heterosexual couples. It also had a chapter on family planning which my folks apparently embraced since they had four kids, each almost two years apart, with birthdays of two in May, one in June, and the last in August Over the years it got dog eared...and not due to excessive handling by my folks.

That brings me the first hardcore porn, and perhaps most importantly the first gay porn, that I ever saw. There was a box of hardcore magazines that some friends and I found while exploring a cave near our rural neighborhood. Yes, just like the proverbial porn found in the woods....only this was found in a limestone cave. There were probably thirty mags in the box, with about ten of them gay. Some of this was really old vintage stuff and it was a mix of glossy pages and the old flat newsprint type of paper. "We" decided to leave them there, but I had other plans and returned there with a backpack that night and brought them all home. They became my "constant companions" with at least a few of them always stashed under the sink in my bathroom. Hmmm, why did my showers suddenly become longer?

I’ve noted in other posts that as soon as I was of age I became a regular, if not somewhat timid and paranoid, customer of X-rated book and toy stores (some also with theaters and arcades) and I gradually built up a huge collection, a footlocker full of porn magazines and sex toys. Though the internet certainly made it easier to buy such products discretely, there was something about that giddy, pulse quickening, excitement I got when entering the often seedy joints. Of course with the advent of porn on video tape, and then on DVD, those were added to the plain unmarked bags of goodies I had in hand when exiting the porn stores. Now, you don't even need to store anything on your local devices if you don't want to.

I was an early adapter of computers, first with Apple II’s and then the earliest Macs and PC’s. Before the advent of web browsers, and largely GUI based internet access, I was quite adept at surfing the newsgroups and got my early web porn off of the alt.sex. and alt.binaries newsgroups on the usenet. To a certain extent, and where not blocked by ISP’s, the alt usenet is still the best repository for really kinky, obscure, fetish material that you won’t find anywhere else.

…and that brings us to the current state of affairs where you can find just about anything you want on websites and can stream just about anything to smart devices and TV’s within your home, hotel...car, phone ! While I kind of miss the magazines, my life is already cluttered enough and I wouldn't want to have to store all of the porn I've got on other media, in magazine or even DVD form.

It’s almost too easy and some of the “magic” is gone.
