L.A. Confidential. There's a simmering tension to the whole thing that makes my mouth water, the veneer of Hollywood glamor and all the seediness under it. Fleur de lis, the prostitution ring where the girls have all had plastic surgery to look like movie stars, the reclusive millionaire throwing its hush-hush parties. The slick, anonymous business cards.
Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe do really phenomenal acting the whole movie, but their fistfight in the file room is probably my favorite scene. Bud White in general is appealing to me, the physicality (sometimes brutality), that air of barely contained violence that makes your head thankful he's a good guy and your guts wish he wasn't, just to see what he'd be like if he really let loose. Exley, bloody and bruised instead of the pristine, straight-arrow exterior he presents the rest of the time. The relish in his voice when he gets asked if he wants to destroy his newly-made reputation. "With a wrecking ball. You want to help me swing it?"
Aesthetically, attractive men beating each other up pretty much always appeals, and the intensity and emotions with it make it even better.
