In my most recent story, I dropped a handful of movie quotes.

Since my characters had a Star Wars movie marathon, I dropped a few from there. Some as thoughts, others as direct dialog, from everyone's favorite tin-plated butler.

I opened this yesterday, wanting to say "The rug really tied the room together" from the Big Lebowski.

And then I looked up the clip of the initial conversation at the bowling alley where the Dude and Walter are talking about the incident, and the first line is actually "Yeah, man, it really tied the room together"

And it caused me to realize why this running gag is so funny. Because the stupid rug is the inciting incident for the whole movie. Which is basically an encapsulation of why the movie is incredible in the way that it is.

That whole subgenre of neo-noir LA not-detective is pulled through an insane conspiracy through hapless circumstance is basically my favorite hyper-specific subgenre of film. And it works for both comedy and drama. As evidenced by Inherent Vice working just as well as TBL in a completely different way.
