Frontiers of Alusia OOC thread.

Just getting back into existence, but I wish I had been able to catch this thread sooner. Looks like there were a lot of good ideas here, its a pity the thread didn't take off. Group threads are tough. I had a Batman based one that looked like it was going to be amazing and I ended up doing more RPing in the OOC thread than the actual thing.

If this thread restarts or just if someone here wants to start something new let me know. I'd love to get in on something like this.

We can at least keep this thread alive for RP discussion an future plans.

Definitely! Even if we use it to post ideas to so we don't forget them.

Well, I guess the question should be asked, since there seems to be so many people interested now, "Who is seriously interested? How many would we have if hypothetically we restarted this?"

I would.
I might build a whole new character, but I have so many ideas, I need to do something with them.

I'd like that.

And if there is like a line or a hat or something, for D&D harems. Where can I get in the queue?

Seriously, show me the man who does not want a D&D harem, and I will show you a liar..

You must speak to the elf about tickets.

I would definitely be interested. I might be a little busy with work, but I should be able to at least post a couple times a week. I'm not sure what I would do for a character just yet, but I guess I'll wait and see what kind of group we have.

Well I'm at least that tall. But no matter how tempting, I could not be a main character right now. So tempting.

So I would need to withdraw from anything not being helpful and scummy.

You must speak to the elf about tickets.

DramaticFlare, I don't have a Scion character.. I have an Exalted character.

Ah, you point out the flaws in my memory. I apologize for them, for they are sometimes frequent and other times deliberately screwing with me. They're all in cahoots, those flaws of mine.
I have a Dark World wizard whose a burnt-out ex-hippie Vietnam war veteran and absolutely hates surprises. All of his allies spend their free time trying to surprise him.... White Wolf has it's fun moments.

Of note, I don't by necessity think a group of girls with only one guy is the only route here. 'twould be fun to have an entire mixed group all dealing with sexual issues and repressions while teasing the hell out of each other. It might also increase the likelihood of success of the group dynamic because there would be several interesting things going on at once, not just one or two.

... Now I have Nine-Times-A-Night stuck in my head.

I'm fine with a mixed group. Let me say what I would not be fine with. Super powered god like characters. Odd race mixtures where you can't even imagine how the coupling would take place, something like a half ogre, half-halfling, or a half dragon, half anything. I also don't care to interact with characters who are device driven heroes. (Ex: My character has this giant sword glaive that is =+20 to hit, goes through any armor like butter, and increases his charisma so that no woman can resist him!)

A true heroism comes from the personality. It comes from inside, from facing adversity and overcoming not only the challenge, but one's own weaknesses. I know at least half the people who have expressed an interest in writing in this have personal health issues to overcome on a daily basis. They may not feel like heroes, but they are. They get up each day, facing pain and suffering, and yet they put on their best face for it and go out to conquer the day. I want heroes like that. Bring out your hero's personality in the story, but showing what human foibles and weaknesses they strive to overcome. That makes for a good story. Those are the kinds of characters I want to play with.

I would be willing to give this a spin. It would be cool to start from the ground floor. serveral people here I have not written with. Hmmm I coukd re-roll my insane elven wizard who blew himself up with homemade hand grenades.... (oh ad&d crafting... You were such a whore) -snicker-

So far that makes two females and three males, plus one to help now and then with NPCs/villains.

No godmoding, focusing on roleplaying instead of mechanics or power, and playing something that another person could reasonably get with are all more than reasonable requests.

While there are clearly some D+D type themes going on all over the place here I was wondering what we should include when presenting a character. In other words, just how statted out should we make our creations and is there a particular system we should use? Just want to be sure I include everything I need as I start working on this.

Part of why I ask is that my intial thought would fall a little bit outside of most of the traditional classes. I was thinking of something ranger esque that uses some exotic equipment. Bolas, smoke bombs, and maybe even some kind of clockwork gadgetry. Nothing magical particularly just someone with the tool for every job, or almost any at any rate. I don't have much idea about him beyond just this, I just had the image in my head when I started thinking about this.

Well, I don't see any real problem with your idea. As for the system or fleshing out your character, I don't need a tight control on that. Each of us is familiar with a different sort of system or game, and so as long as you know what your character is capable of, and you're honest about how their outcomes would be when you write it, it's really your deal.

The way I see it, if a person makes everything too easy for their own character, they just cheat themselves out of the excitement and drama of the story. Some of the best times I've ever had in gaming is when my character faces odds or challenges I'm not even sure she can overcome. When it's suspenseful to even me, that's when I really enjoy it.

As a general guideline, you can compare your stats to how your favorite system applies them. I think we all have a few things in common, the stats are usually comparable as to what they are and what skills they control. Strength is strength across the board, for example, and everyone pretty well knows what that means. Also I think most are on a similar scale of 3-18 or 20 or whatever. This puts 'Joe Average' at about 9-11 on their stats. If your stats are higher, you're better than average, maybe exceptional. If less, then you have some things to compensate for. Of course, racial modifiers apply to this, being pluses or minuses to how the members of the predominant race would see a person of your race. A human might think an elf is beautiful and an orc is ugly, for example. But it takes all kinds to make a world.

I think we also can generally understand what each other means when we say our character is a Ranger or a Fighter, etc. We know in general terms what they can typically do. In the game I play, I imagine rangers as like the CSI of the fantasy world when it comes to reading tracks and signs. They would notice things that the normal person would never even think to check. Recall to mind the scene where Aragorn finds the pile of urukai corpses and then proceeds to figure out what happened to Merry and Pippin. Little clues tell him the whole story. Imagine a ranger comes across a corpse and it's covered with bugs. Maybe they can tell by the presence of a certain kind of beetle that the body is at least 3 days old. That's the kind of thing I mean.

Each class or profession could have incredible things like this about them that people wouldn't ordinarily think about, and are not covered in the rules necessarily. Just use your imagination and make your character come alive.

Your character idea almost sound to me like an adventurer tinker with some ranger skills. He has traveled a lot and picked up little odd things from various cultures he has encountered in faraway places. He would be full of surprises, and yet it's all perfectly explainable, just wondrous to those who haven't seen it before. OF course, in the game system I am used to, every adventuring character has some fighting skills with at least their weapons of proficiency. This means even a magic using type may use a sword. It might be all they have familiarity with, but with that one thing, they are decent enough to hold their own just fine. So a tinker, while not at first seeming like the kind of character who would be much in a fight, still could have quite a formidable skill to offer. And as a ranger too, he might figure out some very ingenious snares and traps. Just my thoughts.

Be still my beating heart; she requires the rules I require of myself!
Though question; couldn't a character be monstrous (i.e. half-dragon) due a curse and be seeking to break it, but not certain if they ever can? They would be at odds with their own willpower, always wondering if they should give up and just learn to be who they have become. And then you can end up with the beauty and the beast scenario too, where they want to love because it's still the same person inside with all the same needs for love and emotional attachment, just a different shell.

Amusingly, I think I've only ever played one character who was truly heroic in mentality, and even they were wracked with guilt to the point of breaking.

Well a good backstory is in my opinion the most crucial element of the character. But I have to admit that I would have trouble relating to such a character physically. There are just certain boundaries of familiarity of appearance and standards of attractiveness that I'd have to stay within I think. I might have a great affection for the spirit of such a person, but being physically attracted to them would be a stretch because they are just too different.

Right, which is why in a one on one situation this idea wouldn't work so well. I'm not saying I absolutely want to play a mutant freak, but in group games it could go better because, again, more players increases the number of interactions. Not being physically attracted to such a creature is natural but.... to but this in maybe the perspective I'm going for, a bog hag switches bodies with you so that you go from earthly goddess old crone. Now you're still you and still enjoy physical intimacy but now no one wants to even touch you. Flipping that hard in the estimations of others could be devastating, so naturally you try to track down a method of reversal. But that takes far longer than you realized, maybe even years...
All I'm saying is that it could a fun story to write, a fun character to play. physical intimacy could be the infinite, ridiculous question; at least until the character finishes their quest and regains their body. Then physical intimacy could be easier.
Since I assume that most people on this forum would at least like some erotica in their role playing, otherwise they'd be playing elsewhere.

I do see your point about how such a character could exist in a fantasy world, and certainly it would provide some 'interesting' character interaction with others. I'm still not sure what kind of physical relationships you'd end up having though, even with people who knew your situation and understood. Even the most understanding and compassionate person would have a hard time being turned on by that I think. Story-wise it could produce great drama and angst. SRP-wise, it's almost a non starter, as there would not be much S in the RP. ;)

Simon Kanon

Race: Human

Class: Bounty Hunter

Strength 13
Dexterity 17
Constitution 14
Intelligence 11
Wisdom 14
Charisma 13

Simon has lived a tragic life and carries a great burden because of it and most people that meet him would never know it. The Kanon family has been hunting demons for the last century. It started when one of Simon’s ancestors unleashed the demon Garkenus into the world and his brother killed the summoner and swore make amends for his brother’s mistake. Over the years due to their hunting the demon many members of the Kanon family have died deepening the blood oath to return the foul creature to the depths of hell. Simon’s own mother died to the demon leaving him alone at the age of twelve.

The would be demon slayer is now twenty-six and very few know of his tragic past, his mission, or even that he has any sort of plan for his life at all. Simon takes what he sees as his destiny very seriously, but only when faced with it. Most of Simon’s time is spent drinking, carousing, and taking bounties. Instead of hunting demons most of the time he uses the skills his mother trained him in throughout his childhood and hunts down criminals and dangerous monsters for cold hard coin.

He doesn’t have too much knowledge of the occult or much of anything else never having been to school, but he is armed with his mother’s journal, her weapons and tools, and a life that has granted him an interesting array of talents through hard experience. A crossbow and short sword are his weapons, but they aren’t the only tools at his disposal. Simon has sought out every trinket and oddity he thinks might give him the edge in a fight including smoke bombs, religious charms, a grappling hook launched with some modifications to his crossbow, bolas, enchanted manacles and an array of other surprises. His mother’s journal sometimes provides just the bit of information he needs to take down some of his more exotic quarries too. Prepared for anything he tends to prepare for nothing and rushes headlong into many situations he should have stayed out of completely.

Height: 5’11”

Hair: short brown and messy

Distinguishing marks: a small scar just below his lip and a large red birth mark on his shoulder just like the one his mother had.

Age: 26

Build: Wiry more than well-muscled. Very flexible and even double jointed.

Even the most understanding and compassionate person would have a hard time being turned on by that I think. Story-wise it could produce great drama and angst. SRP-wise, it's almost a non starter, as there would not be much S in the RP.

Hey, hey, hey, even half dragons need some lovin' too.
<.<
But your point is well made. If you wish to start up this or another game as a group, I'm willing to roll up a character.

Bring on the characters, rolled up or thought up, you'll be writing them either way. I'm going on vacation tomorrow, and will be driving all day, but then I have a week off. I should have access to Lit without any trouble. I might as well consider more stories. I'm getting tired of messing around in the lounges.

Would the game being discussed be in the same setting as the current one and, if so, what's the name of the human empire?

He's often seen sporting sailing apparel due to that being his previous profession. He has a box which contains a suit of dull chainmail with faded sigaldry impossible to make out. He only wears it if battle is planned or extremely likely. He also has a large foppish hat that doesn't come off his head easily, making it great for storms.

History:
I hear you asking that question, or perhaps see you asking it since you're only asking it with your eyes, how does a man like me end up in a shit hole like this? Men like me, we only end up here when everything goes wrong, when all our dreams of ambition or security fall apart right before our eyes. There wasn't any stopping it, I suppose, not as the man I was.
I had a ship for a while. I was bound to Alusia from the large and overbearing and broken Plesa Empire on less than willing terms. Pirates overtook and stormed our ship for the basic medical supplies we were transporting. Since I had been chained up the pirates offered me a chance to join which I took without hesitation. I think I just needed something to do at that point, take my mind off of things. But minds don't like that, when you try to break their fixations. It's driven me to the drink and to a number of deities and back again. I don't even remember which god this symbol belongs to. He probably doesn't like my current drinking anyhow. If it's a he at all.
Even the captain recognized my great fighting skill when one of the men tried to drunkenly use me as the new whipping boy. the next ship we came across was Plesian and I would stop at nothing to ruin the empire now. Captain put me in charge of the boarding party with a simple command: Leave no survivors.
After that battle, Captain comes down sick. We pull into our hidden port only to find the army waiting for us. He put back out to sea but the ship was damaged, and the captain was dead now. Just as we thought we were going to be free of the pursuit ships we were caught in a malestrom just a day's sail off the coast. Our ship and one of the Empire's was brought close together and rather than just try and hold on like smart men they attacked. I told the rest of the crew to just work on keeping us afloat and charged them single handed. By now I had started looking for ways to die, but none of the empire's men could stand before me and live. Half their crew was thrown screaming into the water or cut down by me before the other pirates cut our ship free of 'em, and that was that. Men took me for a leader, started calling me Maelstrom. It fit, in a way.
My life started out like a fine day's sail. I was the son of a man pledged to a lord's service, his direct guard in fact. Before we knew better, before we understood the difference in class, I was brought up with the son of that Lord. But unlike me and those other boys, that boy grew apart. He became aloof, ambitious and even downright devious at times. It wasn't all bad; he did have a decent sword arm and great skill in organizing us against other soldiers. He was never a leader though. He left that to me. It was a... friendly dissatisfaction. Odd, now that I think about it, was that he was always sure to tell his father I was the one who led the charge, and he was the one to think of it. I was promoted quickly, even outstripped my father in a few years. I felt grateful to his bastard ass.
It's all a passage of time. Now, I'm just a washed-up ex-pirate sitting in this shit hole tavern drinking away my shit-hole days, weeping for my past. And you're listening to me, though I don't honestly know why you care.
And you probably want to know why I ended up leaving the Plessian Empire so ignominiously. All you need to know is that her name was Clarita, and by now that noble's son was the noble himself. And that nobleman, he got what he wanted, even if it didn't want him. I was married to her, so when that nobleman found her I was constantly away on campaign. BY the time I was allowed back he had decided to force the issue and had arrested her on some minor charge, never to be seen again. Then he sent me on campaign to this new continent, and when I realized all that had happened halfway through the voyage I was clapped in chains. then the pirates found me.
You know all you need to know now. I don't even know if she's alive or dead, or how long it's been since she's seen the light of day. All I know is that I haven't seen the light of day since the day I left the Plessian Empire, and bitterness is all I have.

Would the game being discussed be in the same setting as the current one and, if so, what's the name of the human empire?

The whole region is known as the Frontier's of Alusia. Alusia is a relatively new continent that the human kingdoms of the Old World have colonized in the last 100-130 years. One of the oldest and most well established colonies is the one this adventure begins in, called Rockbridge. It is inland from the coast approximately 15 days ride, unless you go by river barge, in which case it's only about 7 days. This is simply because most of the way you would travel overland is rough wilderness until you started getting close to the city. It was located where it is because it is equi-distant from two native settlements with which the humans trade to a greater or lesser extent. One is the mountain settlement of the dwarves. The other is a city of elves called Willowbrook.

Rockbridge is a settlement of mostly humans from the small kingdom of Enteria on the main continent. The king of Enteria put it on his youngest son, Prince Roderick, to administer the colony. But Prince Roderick has a reputation for being something of a court fop, interested in furthering his status back home. As a result, he doesn't spend much time in the colony and allows the colonists to essentially take a free hand as long as it doesn't create problems for him. This makes Rockbridge the most Laissez-Faire of the human colonies.

Another human colony city lies about 12-13 days to the south. It is called Layolette, and is the northernmost colony of a rival kingdom to Enteria. Layolette is a poorly run city with much poverty and suffering among it's lower class. Crime and corruption among the governing is rampant. This city provoked a war with it's neighbors, the elven city-state of Randalee that was very costly to both races. As a result, Randalee has closed itself off from humans, and the elves there have become very xenophobic and returned to their traditionalist ways. They banned all persons from their realm who were not at least 3/4 elvish blood. This ban was so strict that even their half elvish princess, Annisthyrienne, was made to leave by her husband, King Elendar.

What other colonies from other nations/kingdoms there are from the old world will be left open to collaboration by the players so that they may have more latitude in creating their character's histories.

Besides elves and dwarves, there is also a city-state of dark elves known as Carrion. The dark elves are not too well received among any group, their succession of power hungry leaders promoting a constant series of nuisance raids on all other races they come in contact with. There have been a series of warlords who have seized power in Carrion in recent years, basically whoever gets enough thug power behind him to take control. This has led to very bad conditions for the simple villagers of Carrion, and many had been streaming to other places as refugees trying to escape. Most went to their traditional enemy neighboring state of Randalee, seeking asylum from the remarkable Goddess-Princess who, rumors say, was receiving all refugees with mercy and relocating them to a new colony of peaceful dark elves at the western edge of Randalee's territory.

Since Randalee banished all of non-elvish blood from their kingdom and the Goddess-Princess is no longer ruling there, it is not known what has become of the dark elf refugees.

A constant problem throughout the lands are gnolls, which are a particularly troublesome type of a race called Andaman. Andaman are a magically created race spawned by the ancient sorcerers and alchemists of the last age of Atlantis. This adventure currently takes place in the world during the Second Age of Atlantis. The Andaman are human animal hybrids that may take the form of wolf-men, hyeana-men (gnolls), Leopard-men, tiger-men, lion-men, and various other combinations. They come in both genders. All of these types are to be found in the wilds of Alusia, but the ones based on large cat hybrids are rare for this part of the continent. Isolated individuals may have been brought to this area by slavers.

Besides gnolls, there are orcs, ogres, trolls, and various other dark races. There is a little known race of human appearing shape changers called the Cheysuli. These people resemble native americans in their appearance and the way they dress and live. Some permanent villages exist, but most are nomadic tribes. Each shape changer type tends to live in groups that correspond to their animal forms. The most prevalent of these are the wolf shape changers, and a few of these individuals have secretly mixed among the incoming humans to live in civilization.

Okay, Annisthyrienne. I consider that character done if a bit heavy-handed and long winded for the intended point of the character. How do you feel about it?
