Cam,
First off, cammy, the feedback that you recieved was asanine. "You write like a man and an untallented one," tells you nothing and therefore you shouldn't heed it. It takes no guts to send such feed back anonymously.
I so agree that in GENERAL there is some difference between the style of writing that is STEREOTYPICLLY MALE and that which is STEREOTYPICALLY FEMALE but there is too much grey area to validate this as a good feedback. Why do I write like a man or vice versa etc? Taken as it is written, the feedback has no value.
I agree with Zach that a reader does set expectations about where a plot is going but this can be an authors tool to instill an emotional response by twisting the plot against that expectation. This needs to done with due care but it can be extremely effective.
