The conversation just now about this has prompted me to visit some websites with a view to a guy experimenting with metal and sizes without too big a spend. Where I've got to in terms of the USA market is the 'anodized aluminium round ring' on offer from 'Cockrings Online'. Here's why I'm suggesting this:

This is a simple ring but still has a good range of sizes without the jump between sizes being too great as it is with most low cost rings. They do 1.3/4, 1.7/8, 2, 2.1/4. Indeed this largest one is just a bit larger that you'll find in the range of most rings on offer, good for a well-hung guy who is a bit cautious about trying metal perhaps.

[Just to state the obvious: I'm talking here of a ring designed for your balls as well as your cock to be brought through]

At $10.95 each it won't break the bank even if you want three sizes to try.

It's slender aluminium and so, while there remains the psychological terror of never being able to get the thing off, there is the assurance that this could be removed surgically if it really, really came to that!

But my point is that it won't come to that, no way, if a guy starts experimenting with a size a bit on the large side for himself, and then 'dares' to try the next smaller size the next time.

A thinner ring like this is I guess a bit easier to get on that the rings with some depth to them. That said, a really snug fit deeper ring is more comfortable when a guy is fully erect, as the 'grip' of it is spread over more of his skin while a narrow band will seem to be digging in some if it's a really snug one.

So, there's my latest thought for what it's worth, for guys who very understandably have some anxieties about encasing their crown jewels in a metal ring.

ps there are British and Dutch outlet, with multi-size standard rings at reasonable cost too. I'll suggest if requested.

I'm wearing my 50mm chrome donut ring right now. It's my heaviest and most comfortable steel ring. All surfaces are rounded so there is little chafing and is easy to get on and off. It snugs up nicely when I get an erection, but the weight makes it slide down my shaft when I'm flaccid. I have two other steel rings that I wear as well. One is a 49mm polished stainless that is about 1" wide and about 1/4" thick with a concave design. My advice for someone wanting to try steel is to pick up a 2 1/4" and a 2" in the cheapest ring possible, get comfortable with both, then go down in size and up in price from there.

As to advice, a leisurely read of this whole thread would do no harm I think! Along with some fun and crazy posts, you'll find some with very specific advice for guys wanting a first exploration of the wonderful world of cockrings.

My guess is that most guys will have the best pleasure from a ring designed to fit behind the balls, that is with ball sack as well as penis through the ring. These ones of course have a larger inner diameter than the kind of ring which is just for the shaft of the penis and just for the duration of a session of sex.

A big choice you have to make is whether you want to jump in at the deep end with a fixed diameter ring - steel, aluminium - or whether you want a stretchy silicone type of ring which is easier to put on and take off but will hold you very differently than the fixed diameter type does.
