"H" what does this mean?

Feedback and Replies...

I am very curious to know whether you get replies from the authors.

I was a little unclear on whether you meant replies from authors you gave feedback to - or responses from the replies you sent to people providing feedback (whew! this gets complicated!)

Anyway - I send a response to everyone who gives feedback on one of my stories. The sort of mindless ones that didn't require much thought or understanding of the story get a fairly standard reply - "Thanks for the feedback it means a lot to me..." If someone gives meaningful comments I respond in kind. These people sometimes reply, I've corresponded with some of them.

When I read a story that I like I always vote - if it really touches me and I think the author did a very good job with some aspect of it I send feedback. I usually let them know I'm also an author on the site because I think that makes the feedback more meaningful - it does for me. I try to keep my comments to style, characterization, plot etc. compliments, i.e. writing technique on the theory that they get enough "This was so hot, you really got me wet" stuff from others. Some authors respond - perhaps less than half of the time. This surprises me because I put thought into my feedback. Maybe not all authors want feedback on their craft. Go figure.

I'm really, really new at this, but I'm an old hand at rationalizing.

I submitted one story at the beginning of this month (a chapter, actually), and it never quite hit the coveted Scarlet H. but it has generated 160-something votes. the average score is 4.13.

the main thing we're looking for is reader response, right? so 1 or 5, if they're voting, you're connecting in some way -- I mean someone has to be really, really moved to rush to the bottom so they can tell you how much they hate your work. :p

as I said, I'm an old hand at rationalizing ...

I always respond to any kind of feedback, except from anon. of course. I like to know what people think and I really appreciate it. I usually send feedback on stories I like, or if the writer asks me for it, or both. My favorite kind is the "This was so hot, it got me off", because that is what I am going for, and I like to know I am successful. I have never gotten anythink from the notorious duo and I feel discriminated against.

when i get feedback, i do respond as quickly as possible. i have this crazy idea that if i do, then they will look forward to my next story. plus i'll keep the addys of those that send me feedback and let them know of my next story. i think it makes for good public relations.

I have to admit that I don't usually reply, except from other women. I like the feedback, but want to keep my privacy too...

Maybe I'll change my attitude after reading your posts above

I always respond to feedback, just to say thanks if nothing else. But I tyhink most writers are only too happy to talk about their work, and this is one of the rare opportunities you get to explain what you were trying to do.

I don't respond to public comments, though I know some people do. I figure that the public comments are meant mainly for other readers, and if the commenter wanted a response, they'd have emailed me.

feedback

I have not been graced with a nasty bit of feedback yet, but I feel it hanging over my head like a cloud and have decided to carry an umbrella!

So far it has been very rewarding and removed all trepidation I was feeling before initially submitting.

I was wondering something about the numbers a story gets for viewing. Is there any indication that large numbers (thousands) in relatively little time means it's too long? I wonder because while the number of views is astronomical the story has only received 26 votes.

The reason I ask is because the submission is rather lengthy and I've got the feeling many see that and bolt before finishing.

Curiously,
E

There are a lot of things that influence the number of views a story gets. Those up near the top in any category get more views than the average story, so it's a case of those that have, get.

I've got a novella up which is quite long, and I get fewer views on that, but more votes/view, and the votes tend to be higher. I think people who are willing to read a novella tend to be more willing to express an opinion and more willing to consider it as a piece of literature than the shorter wank story. Shorter stories attract a lot more read-it & beat-it readers who leave once their "immediate needs" are met.

I feel you're pain!

True the voting system sucks but I guess we have to live with it.

As far as the feedback goes, I answer everyone who sends it.

Even if they hate my story, I thank them for taking the time to let me know.

It's the one's without the ball's to leave their name that hack me off!

even if they don't leave a name on their feedback, i'm thrilled because someone out there took the time to send a feedback. as for negitive stuff, i'm rather lucky in that i haven't recieved hardly any. but i know that can change in a moment's notice.

i don't always understnd how the voters do thier judgement calls, but on the whole, i'm just stunned over the factr that there are ppls out there like what i write. i never consider myself a writer till last year when i was encouraged by my trainer. if it weren't for this man, i wouldn't be here, discussing little 'h's, feedbacks, etc. so i'm still in a daze over all this.

:D

All voting and neg feedback aside, it's what it all boils down to. I have to agree, pretty amazing!
