I used to worry about this as well, and I found it to be somewhat the case when I was new, even though I'd lurked for years. I don't think it's that regulars mean to be rude to newbies. It's just that sometimes they're not always sure if the newbies are trolls or alts or genuine.

This my be a really dumb question, but here goes, but I have seen others use these terms before, what exactly is a troll and an alt?

a troll is a prick with nothing better to do than incite drama and arguments where none is necessary nor prudent... they just try to get under people's skin to see how they'll react.

an alt is a user's alternative username... sometimes a single user will actually have a conversation with THEMSELVES by logging on under different names. most all of them get found out sooner or later... not all alts are for subversive reasons (the good alts are from the north... the bad alts get crushed by falling houses).

And the really bad alts melt when pelted with a bucketful of truth.

EJFan explained it well. I'll add that a lot of times, particularly on the General Board, people create alts because they don't have the balls (or ovaries, as it were) to say what they really feel under their regular username.

i never really mentioned if/how the how to forums have helped me...

in a general sense (i have to think more about specific things) i have to say that it's really helped me confirm something i knew all along.

this is gonna sound stupid but you have to sort of follow me here. because of the way i was raised (not the way i turned out, but the way i was raised) i had a hard time reconciling the sort of dichotomy you have when someone is highly intelligent and highly sexual.

most of the people in my family either:
(a) never said word-one about sex... or....
(b) subliminally suggested that you can't be a sexual person AND be an intellectual person

naturally i have lived a life contrary to that and most everyone i know is at least a LITTLE bit adventurous... or at least not puritanical... with regard to sex.

so, suffice it to say that it's nice to know that this is a common balance or coexistence of sex and smarts... we're fucking brilliant, you could say. ;)

i had a question about a hard drive once. a couple of guys told me what i needed to know. thanks guys.

Ive got a few questions about Mrs P and I that have been rolling around in my head for a bit. Since my questions are personal and Im still trying to get a feel for the "Lit" group though so I haven't posted anything....The one thing I am sure of , is if you ask for advise your gonna get an abundant supply of it.

Beautifully put, quoll. And thanks for starting a thread that's helped so many and really adds to the sense of community here (I've lurked in there from time to time, and the support is amazing). :rose:
Thank you very much Erika, I really do appreciate your compliments and the help you have given myself and many others.
I just have to say, I was stunned when I read your profile, I had you pegged as (putting it as delicately as I can) someone with many more years life experience than your profile shows. I really admire your way of thinking. :rose: :rose:

Stupid inability to accept compliments, hah I beat it this time.
