Just Desserts

Well, I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin. I haven't had any in a long time, so I couldn't tell you how it compares. :p

I've always just eaten rutabagas boiled, so I suppose my experience here is limited. But, oh, I love them so much.

Sorry I'm useless here. :p

ETA: Just saw where Seela compared them to a turnip. I was actually going to ask you if you'd ever had turnip greens because the flavor "bite" you get is similar, at least to me. But, of course, the texture's totally different, and like Seela said, they are sweeter than turnips (or their greens).

I always loved having rutabagas along with the traditional turnip greens and black-eyed peas for New Year's Day. :)

We used to eat turnips pretty regularly in the fall. I found them to be a very tasty treat and if rutabagas are a bit sweeter, then they're probably not far from unspiced gourd/squash. I never had a pumpkin pie until I moved to the midwest, in fact. My mother always cooked up some butternut squash in the pressure cooker and then pureed it into a pie filling with some spices. It's a slightly more gourd-y flavor than what's sold in cans as tuna. Not surprising, since much of what gets canned here is actually squash with a lot of spices added in.

I started my day by making lemon curd and baking and filling a cake. This might be the best morning ever. :)

It's a surprise birthday cake for J. Ideally the cake would have been made yesterday so that the flavors would have had time to marry and the cake to become yummy and moist, but then it wouldn't have been a surprise. I put lemon curd, blueberries and vanilla creme, whipped cream & quark mixture between the layers. Gonna coat it with whipped cream and quark mixture and top with blueberries and chocolate shavings.

Pics pending, depending on success. :D

Crepes with bananas, strawberries and blueberries plus nutella make a wonderful dessert breakfast.

It looks like a 10-year-old made it, but tastes pretty good. :)

It's beautiful! I mean, the icing stayed on and everything. I can't even do that. I love to bake, but I make the ugliest desserts you've ever seen, LOL.

Yeah, the icing stayed on, but was far from smooth and pretty, and the whole thing was woefully lopsided. When my friend saw the cake, her reaction was "awwww". That's probably pretty telling. :D

And Bunny, I've seen your meringue pie somewhere on these boards, and it was glorious, so don't sell yourself short. :)

I tried to make blueberry scones this morning, but they turned into pancakes! Blueberry pancakes are tasty at least.

It's Runeberg's day, so I'm making Runeberg's torte. It's probably my favorite pastry in the whole world. :)

Here's a recipe, in case you'd like to try it (which I highly recommend). Skip the almond essence, though, and don't use only almonds and nuts. The cookie crumbs are essential. Oh, and don't use cognac. Swedish punsch (arrack punsch) is the most traditional, I like rum best. I've never even heard of anyone using cognac in Runeberg's torte.

Fänrik Ståls sägner and a great dessert - not a bad legacy.

Seela, some foodies worry about and stress presentation. All I care about is taste (as long as it isn't falling apart while you take a forkful, who cares?).

Sure, taste is the most important thing, but presentation is important too, especially if I cook or bake for someone else. As was the case with the birthday cake.
