Hell In The Pacific (1968) Directed by John Boorman. With Lee Marvin, Toshirô Mifune.

During World War II, a shot-down American pilot and a marooned Japanese navy captain find themselves stranded on the same small uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean. Each gets his chance to capture the other. They become friends and end up joining forces to build and man a raft.

Aside from extensive domination and bondage as each in turn gets the upper hand, there is a goodly measure of survivalism in primitive and isolated conditions (Robinson Crusoe-ish) as well as illustratively addressing the immorality and senselessness of war.

Interestingly, my understanding is that Lee Marvin was in fact a WWII Pacific Theater infantry vet, so he did have some first hand knowledge and life experience to bring to his role.

Holy shit, I need to see this. Mifune and Lee Marvin in one movie?!

It's good. I also like the one in Eastwood's "Outlaw Josie Wales". Gang rape that's interrupted just before climax. Quite graphic to that point.

When this came out, I was moderating on a different BDSM forum and the majority of people there seemed to hate it because they thought it portrayed kinky people as being weird/mentally ill etc...

Well it does. Portray it's protagonists as weird. Very weird.

But redeeming it, I thought the climactic scene was exceptionally artful and inspiring. She's latched on to this desk. And all society tries to lure her and (literally) force her to abandon her submission (that desk). And she has to have this superhuman strength and devotion to hold on to and stay focused on her submission and her personal dedication to her submission. Now that is very, very true to life. I think a woman has to have that kind of strength, at least to be a woman who is attractive to me.

You read these forums and a very large portion of submissive women's problems they talk about is this very thing. Whether overtly or subtly, society tries to lure or pry them away from the course of submission. Hell, that destructiveness has even been embraced by the modern and online kink philosophies of limits, negotiation, do-me safe words (red, yellow and green), dungeon masters' approval required and so on and on and on.

I think the movie had a very valuable moral. To those of us who are interested in such things. And that is art.

Thanks for all the suggestions, you'all, but I didn't see (in my high-speed perusing) anyone mention "Lust, Caution." To my mind, the first hot scene in that movie, where the chief takes the would-be assassin in the hotel room by force, is one of the best examples (and most enjoyable) of a power exchange. That scene become instantly twistted around: who is seducing whom, and how? When at the last second she looks over her shoulder, you KNOW she is choreographing the whole thing. It is soooo hot.

While she may have been the model of a good sub. He left some things to be desired.

i get a little sick of the burden of proof of dedication always being on the sub. He struck me as one of those D's who's never quite satisfied she means it and when he is it is only temporary and she will have to go to greater and greater lengths to prove her submission. Heaven forbid she accidentally do something to shake his trust in her. She'd be screwed.

I didn't read back terribly far, so I don't know if anyone has mentioned "A Woman in Flames." It's a German film from the early 80s about a pro Domme and her gigolo boyfriend. Mentally twisted, with some hot domination scenes and a reasonably well-paced story (for a German film, anyway LOL).

No, you are right. It was much more interesting because of their flaws. i do wish they had explored his a little more but overall yes the fact that they were both fucked up did make it better.

That reminded me of another flick! Long Kiss Goodnight, with Geena Davis. I love the scene where she's tied to the water wheel. The whole movie had me in various states of arousal, but that was near-peak. Lots of blowing stuff up, too.
