People fetishize it?
I might note though that there are a lot of religions and cultures with similar head coverings. Since hijab is generally considered just to be the headscarf over here, certainly I see "hijab" used interchangeably with "headscarf", though if we want to get technical it includes "a loose outer garment that obscures the shape" as well. So it's not really "cultural appropriation" in the same way as other things may be. It's not only the Muslims and it has its place in western religious culture as well. Muslims certainly don't have a stake on headscarves, westerners can definitely convert to Islam if they'd like (disregarding the fetishism comment) and then it would be theirs too. At any rate, headscarves are a pretty common mega conservative religious thing, certainly I grew up seeing women in headscarves (nearby Hutterite colonies and all and there's a lot of Mennonites who wear scarves and I'm sure the Amish do too). And then there's nuns, Sikhs... etc. Just my little sulking.
As for the blog, all I can say is "hot". And not the sexy kind of hot. I'm thinking "people sweat, so where is it all going?" kind of hot. It seems... impractical. Sincere and consistent from post to post but... very impractical.
Sorry. I use the word hijab as a blanket term for covering up modestly, I meant specifically burkas. I could've explained that better. It's true, Islam doesn't solely claim the headscarf, and, yes, westerners can and often due convert... I don't really have the right words to explain how some non-Muslims romanticize and sexualize, sometimes to the point of fetismism, the coverings some Muslim women use to convey modesty... I might just be overly sensitive because I've belonged to the culture and community and have been on the receiving end of outsiders looking in. I apologize for generalizing, though!
