"Fame's" Leroy Dies

By Bridget Byrne

Gene Anthony Ray, who briefly found fame as dancer Leroy Johnson in both the movie and TV versions of Fame, died Friday in New York.

Ray, who was HIV (news - web sites)-positive, succumbed to complications of a stroke suffered in June. He was 41.

Ray's natural talent proved perfect for the role of the sure-footed, street-smart Leroy, brilliant in performance, but frustrated in the classroom by his illiteracy. The 1980 movie, and subsequent TV series, followed the hopes and dreams of students at New York's High School of the Performing Arts. Ray attended that school for a time, but was kicked out. "It was too disciplined for this wild child of mine," his mother, Jean E. Ray, told the New York Times.

Born in Harlem, Ray attended Julia Richmond High School. He skipped class to audition for the Leroy role in the hit movie that won Oscars (news - web sites) for the title song and for Best Original Score.

He reprised the part on the NBC series, which debuted in 1982. Low ratings led to the show's quick cancellation, but Fame continued in production for MGM Television as a syndicated series from 1983 to 1987. During the show's run, Leroy graduated and became an assistant dance instructor at the school.

Ray's later film credits included Out of Sync, directed by Debbie Allen, star of the Fame TV series. He also appeared as himself in an episode of the 1998 TV series Linc's, on which Allen is also credited as director. He appeared as a dancer and was credited as assistant choreographer in the 1996 movie Eddie, starring Whoopi Goldberg (news) as an NBA coach.

His link to Fame was never severed. In the '80s with other cast members he had performed in Britain in a series of concerts--a tour that was filmed and shown in the U.S. in 1983 as the The Kids from Fame TV special. He joined several cast members for a reunion special that was included on the recently released Fame DVD and, earlier this year, he took part in the BBC documentary Fame Remember My Name, which has not yet aired.

Ken Brett

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Ken Brett, brother of Hall of Famer George Brett and the youngest World Series pitcher in history, died after a long battle with brain cancer. He was 55.

Brett, who died Tuesday night, was part-owner of the Spokane Indians minor league baseball team and Spokane Chiefs hockey team. The teams confirmed his death Wednesday.

Brett pitched 14 years in the major leagues, going 83-85 with a 3.93 ERA. He also hit .262 with 10 homers.

He set a record for pitchers by homering in four straight starts for the Phillies in 1973, and he was the winning pitcher in the 1974 All-Star Game while playing for Pittsburgh.

Brett was 19 years, 1 month when he pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the Boston Red Sox in the 1967 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

"He had a lot of poise," said former Red Sox shortstop and teammate Rico Petrocelli. "I remember that he was a lot like his brother. He had that great sense of humor.

"He was very mature for his age and very well-liked."

The team's surprising success that season is known as the "Impossible Dream" in Boston, where fans kindled a love affair with the team that hasn't abated since.

"He fit into the clubhouse perfectly," Petrocelli said. "We were young and everybody could take things lightly. We didn't take losses really to heart. We just played as hard as we could, and that was it."

A left-hander, Brett tied the modern record for playing with the most teams: 10, including Milwaukee, Philadelphia, the New York Yankees, the Chicago White Sox, California, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Kansas City, where he and George were teammates, before retiring in 1981. He shared the record with Bob Miller and Mike Morgan.

He won a high of 13 games three times in his career, with Philadelphia in 1973, Pittsburgh in 1974 and the White Sox and Angels in 1977.

Brett later served as a broadcaster for the Angels and Seattle Mariners.

"He was valued highly as a member of our teams and even more highly as a friend," the Kansas City Royals said in a statement. "We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his family and want them to knew Ken will always hold a special place in our hearts and our memories."

Brett moved to Spokane several years ago to help run the minor league teams he owned with his brothers George, John and Bobby.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa, two children, mother Ethel and his three brothers.

Kenneth Alven Brett was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 18, 1948.

Growing up in California, Ken was considered a better athlete than George, who was five years younger. Ken Brett was the Red Sox's first-round draft pick, and fourth pick overall, in the 1966 amateur draft. He made his major league debut the next season.

A good-hitting pitcher, he batted .262 with 10 homers in 347 at-bats. He set a record for pitchers in 1973 by homering in four straight starts for the Phillies.

Hank Aaron knocked a Brett fastball out of the park for his 700th career homer on July 21, 1973.

On May 27, 1974, Brett held the San Diego Padres hitless into the ninth before settling for a 2-hit shutout win. In the second game of a doubleheader, his pinch-hit triple knocked in two runs for an 8-7 Pittsburgh win.

On May 26, 1976, Brett had a no-hitter with two out in the ninth inning against California when Jerry Remy's slow roller down the third base line was allowed to roll by Jorge Orta and ruled a hit rather than an error. Brett won the game 1-0 in 11 innings

Not to be too flippant or forward by this posting, but is it safe to say that as of yesterday, Michael Jackson's career should be here soon? Just wondering...

Actor Jonathan Brandis, 27, who starred in the movie "The Year That Trembled," which was filmed in Ohio, was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment Wednesday. Brandis, 27, was found by friends and pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the Los Angeles coroner's office. There were no signs of violence. An autopsy was due to be performed yesterday, an investigator said. "The Year That Trembled," produced by Tyler Davidson and Scott Lax, who were living in the Cleveland area at the time, was filmed in Ohio and premiered at the Cleveland International Film Festival in 2002. Brandis played Casey Pedersen, a young man who is caught up in the turmoil of the Vietnam War. "It's a terrific tragedy, and our hearts go out to the family," said Davidson, who now lives in Los Angeles.

This is so sad :( Jonathan was one of my favorite actors growing up. I cant imagine what could have been bad enough for him to take his own life. And he was only 2 years older than me..Scary.

Warren Spahn passes away

BROKEN ARROW, OK -- Warren Spahn, the winningest left-handed pitcher in major league baseball history, passed away today at his home at the age of 82.
Spahn, inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, compiled a 363-245 record with a 3.09 ERA in 1942 and from 1946 through 1964 with the Boston and Milwaukee Braves and then one season with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. His 363 wins are fifth on major league baseball's overall victory list.

A 14-time National League All-Star, Spahn holds or shares nine Braves franchise records, including most games started (635), complete games (374), innings pitched (5,046) and shutouts (63). He won 20 or more games in a season 13 times, a N. L. record, and led the league in wins eight times, in ERA three times and in complete games nine times.

Spahn, the National League Cy Young Award winner in 1957, pitched two nohitters in his career, the last a 1-0 win over the Giants on April 28, 1961, when he was 40. The Braves inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1999 and dedicated a statue in his honor in front of Turner Field last summer.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

British Actor David Hemmings Dies at 62

One of Britain's best-known actors, David Hemmings, has died at the age of 62.

Mr. Hemmings became a 1960's icon when he starred alongside Vanessa Redgrave in the 1966 movie "Blowup," directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. He also became known to contemporary film audiences through his role as the bad-tempered Coliseum master of ceremonies in Ridley Scott's "Gladiator."

However, he also made important stage appearances. As a successful child actor he was a favorite of English composer Benjamin Britten (in more ways than one—Britten reportedly asked Mr. Hemmings' father if he could unofficially "adopt" the boy for part of every year). The boy starred in the premiere of Britten's opera The Turn of the Screw at the age of nine.

As an adult, he starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1975 musical By Jeeves. Despite having Mr. Hemmings as a star draw, as well as a book by Alan Ayckbourn, the show was a flop.

Many theatregoers mourned the long absence from the stage of someone who aged into a wonderful character actor. According to the Daily Telegraph, however, Mr. Hemmings had no regrets about his famously poor choice of projects: "I've done some real stinkers, but I don't give a shit about fame. I don't consider myself to have been a star. I just married some pretty women."
:rose:

I saw that David Hemmings had died and that made me sad. I met him once at a party and he was pretty much the way you'd think. For some reason I remember him in war movies.

David hemmings

OK Someplace

We can all go to the TV book

I was picking from memorey.
He has been in a lot frequent movieis.
I am from England and I do not remember any war movies he was in .
That,s why I called you on it.

I to like David Hemmings and I think I have seen all his movies
But I repeat I may be wrong.
You were the first person to reply to me s0 I not looking for confrentation.
You called me on my handle, I answered but were does something come from.
Did you call Husband badlad
Was he from England.
Does he live in Dallas

Yes he's English and lives in Texas. We moved here in 1983 also. His spelling is about as bad as yours even though he attended one of your prestigious public schools. Your litname is a takeoff of our family name that my children often use as a handle, hence the red flag. In a posting above, you used a phrase that he would use that is not an English affectation. Your crude threads in the Playgound and Personals also sounded like him. I am still not convinced I'm being played here, but I will, from now on, cease to mention it. I hope you enjoy your time at lit. There is something for everyone here.

I'm sorry you didn't appreciate the Hemmings cv. Did you know he directed the A-Team and Magnum P.I.? That fact would mean more to most of the younger people here who have no idea of why Hemmings was called an icon of the 60's. I thought people would like to appreciate the variety of his work. It was not inappropriate to post it in this thread. Have a good night.

He directed the A-Team?

It takes balls to list THAT on ANY resume!

Hemmings

Attack,Attack,Attack.

Sorry about spelling was going for content.
Curious about the phrase?
I can not beleive The david Hemmings I know Directed Magnum or A team.
He was a Quiet Rebel of the 60's , sexualy promiiscious(sorry about spelling but you get the idea)and a free spirit.

Re... crude threads, I was tring to get a reaction..........I may be trying to hard to fit in to quick
I have read some of your threads and am sorry we have got off to such a bad start. As I am so new, I could go back and pick a new name. maybe smackedboy.....any sugestions

Snow

Not here mate.
Would love to see some.
Forcast for flurrys at christmas here in Dallas

'40s Actress Jeanne Crain Dies

:rose:

Tuesday, December 16, 2003

Jeanne Crain, 78, an ingenue of 1940s films who was often dismissed as a "glamorous mannequin" until impressing critics as a black woman passing for white in "Pinky" and a socially insecure spouse in "A Letter to Three Wives," died Dec. 14 at her home near Santa Barbara, Calif., after a heart attack.

Ms. Crain's wholesome beauty made her an ideal symbol of American charm and desire during and after World War II. Among her early hits were the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "State Fair" (1945), as the farmer's daughter, and "Margie" (1946), as a young girl in the 1920s with a crush on her French teacher.

She also was the good sister to Gene Tierney's bad one in the suspense drama "Leave Her to Heaven" (1945) and the sweet and supportive wife of returning GI William Holden in "Apartment for Peggy" (1948).

In 1949, she made two films in a distinctly different mold: Joseph L. Mankiewicz's "A Letter to Three Wives" and Elia Kazan's "Pinky."
...
Her last significant role was playing a socialite in "The Joker Is Wild" (1957), opposite Frank Sinatra.
...
Survivors include five children. Two sons predeceased her.

OSLO, Norway -- Keiko, the killer-whale star of the Free Willy movies, was buried yesterday in a snow-bound pasture during the deep darkness of Nordic winter in a ceremony kept secret from the public.

"We wanted to let him be at peace," said Dane Richards, one of his caretakers. "He's free now and in the wild."

The roughly six-tonne whale died Friday, likely of pneumonia, in a Norwegian bay, where his team was trying to reintroduce him to the wild.

Former Blackhawk Keith Magnuson is killed in car wreck

AP , CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Wednesday, Dec 17, 2003

Former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman and coach Keith Magnuson was killed in an auto accident in suburban Toronto, the team said. He was 56.

Magnuson played for Chicago from 1969-1980 and coached the team for 1 1/2 seasons. He was riding with former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Rob Ramage, Blackhawks spokesman Jim DeMaria said.

"We're still investigating, but it looks like one car crossed over the center median," York Region Const. Steve Morrell told the Canadian Press.

An official at William Osler Health Center in Toronto said Ramage was headed for surgery late Monday but wouldn't confirm his condition. Canadian Press cited media reports saying Ramage had suffered a dislocated hip and was in stable condition.

A woman from a different vehicle was also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The accident occurred at around 5pm Monday in Vaughan, a suburb just north of Toronto.

Magnuson, who was a member of the Blackhawks' 75th anniversary all-star team which was selected in 2001, played for Chicago from 1969-80. He had 14 goals, 125 assists and 1,442 penalty minutes in 589 NHL games. In 68 playoff games, he had three goals, nine assists and 164 penalty minutes.

Magnuson coached the Blackhawks from 1980-1982 and had a record of 49-57-26.

"He was hard-nosed. He was a tough guy," DeMaria said. "He wore his heart on his sleeve. He was a great player."

Magnuson continued to live in the Chicago area and remained visible with the team until his death, DeMaria said.

"He was a member of the alumni association of the Blackhawks and of the NHL," DeMaria said. "He was always down at the United Center and he always wished the team well."

Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz issued a statement extending sympathies to Magnuson's family.

Didn't start the thread, but it's kinda neat having all the latest corpses in one thread. Helps one to keep up to date with what's going on "celebrity-wise".:rose:

Not to be crass, but isn't it odd that Keiko the whale died at the "rock star" age?
