Sophie stood next to her chair, clearly expecting Jake to jump right in and clean up the worm. As hard as it was to say 'no' to Sophie by email, it was really difficult to give her bad news as she stood expectantly next to her desk.
"Ah, hi Sophie," muttered Jake, still standing next to her chair. "I got your email, but before I could reply to it the mail server went down." He tried to remember what he had written in his email to her. It was always easier for him to say what he meant to say when he had time to write it out.
"You see, you know..." He started again. "You know the server we need for the new marketing campaign? I know you're involved with the other side of that project. Well, I've got to get that thing up and running by the deadline. It's just the highest priority right now."
He looked at her sweet face, still smiling in anticipation of getting some satisfaction.
"You know, your computer is at the top of my list, Sophie. But I just can't get to any of this virus cleanup until I can get the server program to compile. I'm sure you understand how important that is. I'm really just taking a quick break -- I've been working on it all weekend, pretty much non-stop. I just thought I'd swing by your office and let you know that I really can't do it right away, but I'll fix it as soon as I can."
Did she understand the kind of pressure he was under? The marketing department had a big budget, and interns. Did she understand that for the past few months he had been handling all of Literotica, Inc's information technology needs alone? He searched her face for some sign that she recognized that he was here to tell her 'no'. But as he looked in her eyes, he began to forget what it was he was refusing to do for her.
