That's a common experience. My wife couldn't find mine the first time that she tried either. There's a few things to know. First, become familiar with the general anatomy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostate has some informative diagrams. Understand that the diagrams are a general guide, and the position varies a bit from man to man.

Second, the prostate swells with prostatic fluid and becomes firm during arousal and before orgasm. The more turned on you get him before you start searching for it, the firmer it will be (and easier to find). Try it during a BJ, when he's close to orgasm.

Lastly, because of it's proximity to the bladder it's easier to find when the bladder isn't completely empty.
