Mt story rejected three times and I can't get a reason off anyone

Because he made it as a blanket statement about ALL the editors in the VE program, or at least that's how it read to most of us.

Kind of like lumping all people of middle eastern dissent into the group of terrorists, but on a grander and more offensive scale, of course.

Actually, that's exactly what was suggested: (and I doubt ThomasCrapper is a newbie, see my comments below)

Again, how does he know what "most readers" like? I've posted a few stories in the past with one of the main characters speaking his/her native language in spots, and I've been told it added to the story, not detracted from it.

Again, another blanket statement by someone whom I suspect hasn't gotten good comments or feedback on his stories so he changed user names in hopes of turning things around. So the "most readers" he refers to are probably people who were unhappy with what he posted and he's using it as a generalization for everyone.

I thought this guy was kind of a dumb dumb when he first posted, but he does say "I suggest", and he's talking about his personal experience, I don't think he's doing much lumping. My first suggestion was the best, I need the credit.

Yo, my stories were crap and I got 90% quality comments back in the day. Now I get quality ratings but not so many comments. Go figure, people make generalizations about their experiences. If you post enough stories in different categories you should be able to get a good feel for most readers on this site. It's like random sampling or something, you don't need to get a comment from every reader on the site to get a feel for the readership here.

In terms of the editor's forum, place is deader than dead, gets maybe three posts on a good day. Which might lead one to suspect that the crapper isn't so far off with his opinions.

LaRocha, you seem like a sensible guy and I have no wish to get involved in Lit polemics, but I have to say you misjudge why some of us post stories. I have, late in life, rediscovered a taste for writing but I am not looking for the approval of the whole of Lit, nor any prizes. You say, "If you post enough stories in different categories you should be able to get a good feel for most readers on this site." That is not my intention and I don't write for those reasons. I write, as I think anyone who genuinely wants to write does, because a story grabs me and makes me want to write it. Whether anyone wants to read it or not is their prerogative, as is whether they like it or not.

OK I understand that there is a schism between those who visit this site for stroke stories and those who come for the quality of the writing. Don't get me wrong, there is a place for both, in my opinion: I am partial to a good stroke story, but what really pleases me is a stroke story that makes me think, and there are many of them here in the good ship Lit, partly because there are a lot of good women writers here.

So I guess I am saying that I don't like the implied nihilism of Tom's comment (just as I don't like, but keep, the nihilism of some of the comments my fiction elicits--it's bracing sometimes to read those Anon comments, isn't it?).

I mean this in good part and don't take offence--there is too much of that on Lit as it is! I hope you can read my story, one day, and feel free to comment as you see fit.

And for those who come for the quality of the writing, there's always Scouries.

Flush the Crapper down the toilet. He'll be joined by his best efforts.

I think now that we've said what we need to say to him, it's best just to ignore him and let this thread die a slow death.

He seems pretty disheartened. I feel bad for him because he's probably really tried to get an editor through the various channels and has come up short. One must admit that there's really nothing going on in Editor's Forum.

Well, my story has been rejected a fourth time. I did find one or two minor spelling mistakes, but the rejection note objected to "onside" and "coffeehoused", both well-known Anglicisms. Given that I have read plenty of stories on Lit lately that are frankly illiterate, I am really unamused. Email to Laurel coming up.

Did you include anything in the notes box? What?

Not picking on you. This is a very useful example for a broad range of submitters. The rejection system here can be mysterious; this discussion can help explain what does/doesn't work and bring more understanding to why.

I did as you suggested and put a note that I was happy with the text and that there were some French words in it. But why is someone picking on my one or two mistakes when I have read stories recently where virtually every other word is misspelt?

I think you've got someone being a tad picky. My stories have every other word mispelled because I think I'm funny and I prefer the way the word sounds when it's spelled in my alternative. I also invent new words when US English fails me. But the only time a story of mine was rejected was when the site editor wanted to make sure there wasn't any underaged sex. After making a third note to go with the previous two that there was no such occurance, it was subsequently rejected for having two different font sizes. It got in just fine after I fixed that, and I've had no subsequent rejections of my following three submissions, and I can assure you that there are purposeful mispellings and nonsense words abounding in it.

And if there's nothing going on in the Editor's Forum, it's because this place isn't a break room, it's our office. We come here for work, for when someone wants an editor, when someone wants advice on one of the more delicate idioms of George Dubya's or Her Majesty's English, or someone can just plain not keep their silence any longer seeing me call myself a volunteer, yet having such horrible spelling.

Remember to tip your waitress.

Thanks. Seems the best thing to do is PM Lurel directly, as this is outside the experience realm I see discussed here, and there likely is more to it than we've seen here in description.

Good luck with it, and when it's finally posted, let us know--and let us know what the hangup wass if you're comfortable in doing that. There are others having this struggle as well.

I have PM'd Laurel, and I will let you know the result. I have 3 stories and many poems that have been submitted without problem, so I need to find what is at the root of this. Thanks for your help and encouragement.

Send a PM to Laurel as sr said. She's the boss and can give you an answer on what's happening.

Hang in there. :rose:

Hang in there. :rose:

Thank you. Your post is most welcome. x

Kicking and screaming might make you feel better though, although don't scream at anyone who's been helpful to you. :)

Seriously, when you get a response from Laurel, let us know what she said, even the general neighborhood, because it might help future Lit writers better understand the mysterious rejection notifications.

Oh I have felt like kicking and screaming alright--thank God for that British stiff upper lip! It only took about two hours or so to kick in after the said kicking and screaming, lol.

I will let you know what I hear from Laurel, and again thank you for your support. x

OK, so I still haven't heard anything re my story, or had a reply from Laurel but I just noticed the blue "pending" next to my story in my list has turned a non-clickable grey? WTF is that?

Can't say, but I wouldn't suggest clicking on it.
