I think that is correct, but you go on saying lay is also correct.

"Now I lay me down to sleep."
The subject is me.
"I will lay it down here."
The subject is it.
I will lay down.
This is not correct.
I will lie down.
This is correct.

Lay is also the past tense of lie.
Confusing isn't it.
