Interesting design, dragonlace. I'm curious, why is it an all-black design? It seems like a great candidate for some beautiful colors.

it looks more ancient in the black and on me color wouldn't look right, the black looks perfect on me.... i drew the design before having the artisit put it on me so it means alot to me, he helped me to get a few things right but it was my own design.....for me it has to be something that means alot to me to permanently mark myself with it and it took me a couple years to finally get it right :)

oh and the picture doesn't do it justice :)

I completely understand - it took me a long time to decide on my tattoo as well. And mine is all-black too, so I can understand that. :) I just thought it might look good with some color, but you're right that it looks more "ancient" in black.

It means "peace" -- figured I could use some -- there is a myth or saying that if you put Japanese Kanji on your body that the kanji goes into your body and grants what the words say -- can't hurt! :) And things have been more peaceful! It only took a little over an hour and I almost fell asleep too -- it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. I want another one too! Dragonlace that is a really beautiful one -- while color would be nice the simplicity of the black is quite nice.

Thank you so very much :)

You know, last night I dreamt I had a tattoo -- two rather impressionist, overblown roses running up the inside of my left leg. And there were little jewels buried in my skin to highlight the design... It was quite pretty. I wonder whether I would ever have the guts to do it in real life.

wow. i gotta say, that sounds gorgeous. stunning, right up the leg, too. if you thought of a more discrete body part for the design, do you think you'd go through with it?

i've been considering something similar around my belly button, though not so dreamy and elaborate.

Ooohhhh

Wow, everyone - thanks for sharing these, they're really inspiring. One of my dear friends is out tonight getting another - she's gotten one every 6 months or so, and it's time for another. I've been warned, if I get one, I'll want another.

I've been thinking of getting one for almost a year now, and I've decided I want a little cricket, probably in the small of my back. The problem is finding or designing the artwork. I'd like something that is immediately recognizable as a cricket, is all one color - probably black or green, and is more line drawing than shaded or colored in...

If anyone has any artwork of a cricket, I'd love to see it - pm me or post it here, I don't want to hijack the thread... I'd like to have something decided on by my birthday (Feb 23) but if I don't find the perfect thing, I won't rush it.

Serijules, I love the phoenix - I'm in awe, that's really amazing!

How very remarkable....

As I was writing my last post, I was also doing an image search for pictures of crickets... and I really like this one - I played with in photoshop for a bit...

Now I think I have to consider color, but this might be just exactly what I want... although I think it looks a bit like a water-strider as well as a cricket, but I don't mind that. :)

It used to be a very standard photograph... I'd love to hear any thoughts... but I think this is what I want!!

that's a good find. any reason why a cricket suits you?

your back for a first tatoo is pretty nervy. i don't know if you know this already, but the the lower back is unlike any other part of the body. anyone i've spoken to says a tatoo there can be particularly painful, although pain is different for everyone.

Dreamy -- good word!

I don't know what I would actually have the guts for. I've been sort of dwelling on the idea of burying jewels into my skin, but I'm not sure whether that's actually feasible. It just seems so much more appealing than a tattoo.

Though I have definitely considered tattoos in the past. My number one location would be the back of my neck, right under my hairline.

evesdream -

Yeah, a cricket. :) They're good luck, & for years growing up, my favorite thing to read was a magazine called Cricket. It was one of the few non-necessary things I could talk my parents into getting me, and I loved it & even paid for it out of my own money in high school when I got a job & they said I was too old for it. And there's a third reason, but that's for me to know.

I've been told that the back is a really painful place to get a tattoo - one of the worst... I've always been a wuss about pain, but lately I've been getting better. The thing is - if it is pain that I am the cause or chooser of, for something I deem worthwhile, I can take it. If I hurt myself at work, on a knife or sharp thing or whatever, I deal really well. If I'm giving blood, it's fine, no problem. A bee sting, whatever... it's just the idea of things like dentist-inflicted pain that I have trouble with... like, the guy who wanted to yank all my wisdom teeth. No. They don't hurt, they're minding their own business, and I'm keeping them till I think I have time and money and a good reason to get them out.

As to where on my back, I'm thinking of about midway down, or perhaps a third of the way down from between my shoulders. It's a place I very much like having touched, and having a tattoo there is something I've been thinking about for a long time.

A couple of my friends think I should absolutely go for it, but another says absolutely not, wait till I'm 40 so it doesn't look like hell when I get there... lol - what if I don't even live to be 40, then what? ;)

I've never heard of jewels being put under the skin. Metal rings and such, yes, and there are stories of cultures whose men put pearls under the skin of their cocks, but I've never heard of jewels. Where would you put them?

Mine is on my upper back and it hurt so much I'm not sure I'll get more.

I thought I was a total wuss, but recently B was caressing it and said "holy shit you're scarred, they went too deep!!"

So maybe I'm not a wuss and maybe my excellent design is not the only criterie for a good artist....

I might have a high pain tolerance but lower back didn't seem to bad -- didn't even bleed.

My tattoo is on my upper back and covers quite a large portion of it...I didn't think it hurt any more than the one on my ankle...same sensation, only after awhile I started getting tired of it since the sessions were much longer than my 20 min ankel tat lol.

I get a little exasperated when people say "oh don't one there, thats the worse!" because if you read tattoo stories on BME, you will find that the ankle, upper back, lower back, arms, stomach, foot, thigh, calf, neck, etc etc hurt the WORST....which doesn't exactly leave much.

What it comes down to is tattooing hurts, period. I've never met someone that said tattooing didn't hurt at some level. It is how a person tolerates it that makes the difference, so no one can say that one area is worst than another, because that will guarenteed vary from person to person. No sense making people rethink their chosen area just because it was particularily painful for you. (generic you here, not directing this at anyone)

Just my two cents!

Watergirl, that's so funny, when you said you were looking for cricket images, that magazine's logo is the first thing i thought of. Being forty with an old tattoo is underrated too. i kind of like the idea that the artwork changes the same way that the body will.

i've never heard of embedding for body jewlery either. I have seen bar implants that go under the fleshy parts of your body. kind of like this **____**. implants that raise a design or shape under the surface of your skin is another way to go..

Nemo caught my corny word play..

wow serijules beautiful beautiful...
that is truly amazing... i've been wanting to do something like that too..
i still cant believe you fell asleep

I still don't have the background done, I just can't find the exact effect that I want so I'm waiting, but the bird itself is done...I think I posted it on another thread awhile back but I'll post it here again, new picture after healing anyhow so it's better.

Well, I recently got sitting one of two on the background done so thought I would share.

The moon will be coloured next time in shades of grey and baby blues/lavenders. The stars will all have coloured centers (mostly blues, lavenders, yellow and coral). The large star will have a faceted "like a diamond in the sky" center, and the twinkly stars will extend up and around the bird in a much much looser format than they are in the mist right now, just to blend the two together a bit more.

This was taken right after it was done, so its very stark and bold compared to the long healed bird, but it will look incredible when it is all coloured and healed, if I do say so myself :)
