If Hurley's presumption is right, about Windows 98, you didn't set up a server. Rather you have a peer-to-peer network with file/printer sharing which is NOT the same as a server. Maybe the machine you're talking about is only used as a central file repository, but that does not a server make.

Seting up a server is something of a task and requires a server software like Novell, Unix, Windows NT/2000 Server, Linux, etc.

The task of setting up a Unix server to provide an Internet POP is a bit more of a challenge because it's not merely a few machines strung together with coax, UTP/STP or fiber.

If your credentials are so truly impressive, maybe you can show them how it's done. If not, perhaps you can get your membership fee refunded!

Even if what he set up was "Personal Web Server" which is included with Windows 98, it's no great feat as Windows does most of the work.

You make some very good points about not all 'servers' being the same. Setting up a LAN server is most definitely not even close to setting up a High Volume Web Server on a UNIX system.

Okay, so I fucked up. So shoot me. I was trying to be a little humorous/sarcastic in my first post, and I got misunderstood. I guess I can see how that would happen,you all don't know me or my sense of humor. But when I got attacked with both barrels, I fought back.

What I don't understand is why, even if I had been serious, you can't express a dissenting opinion around here, especially if it has to do with "management". I'm sure Laurel isn't perfect, and not eveyone is going to agree with everything she does. But I for one don't want to live "in fear" of pissing off the madam or her "followers".

I shouldn't have been such a smartass...but frankly I couldn't believe how my simple (yet misunderstood) comment was received.

But upon re-reading your original post, I believe my first impression of you was that of a condesending, higher than thou know-it-all with an attitude. Stay w/me here Grey, I'm not trying to be a butt! The tone was even accusatory at times with the remark on whether the new server even existed.

I'm just guessing here, but I think that the majority of people are (and were) empathizing with Laurel and her server dilemma simply because they appreciate all of the work she and Manu do to keep this site in a class of its own.

I think it's great that you expressed your opinion of frustration with Laurel and the server issue. But realize that the others were also expressing THEIR opinions of your post. It works both ways...that's the beauty of the board.

Laurel doesn't rule this board with an iron fist. She allows all opinions and topics to be posted without judging them or making anyone feel like they should just keep quiet, say nothing, do nothing, and cower in a corner for fear of her wrath.

I, for one, haven't been visiting this site for too long, but I have the utmost admiration for Laurel and Manu. Why? Because they have built a site like nothing I've ever seen. The people who frequent this site are awesome and have kept me coming back with their insights on a variety of subjects.

You can express dissenting opinions around here. It's just that your attempt at sarcasm triggered our protective instincts.

Laurel has enough problems with dealing with the number of submissions that keep her buried in a backlog, trying to gets scripts written to improve the site, unresponsive service provider, and a new server that refuses to function. Those of us who know how much she has to deal with are very leary about letting her get any further stressed by negative posts.

I, for one, don't want Laurel to be one of those site operators that gets overwhelmed by a perception that's it's not worth the effort anymore, and just shuts everything down. (Not that I think that's likely.)

It's not the 'followers' that jumped you, but the 'protectors' who saw your post as an attack on a damsel who was already in distress.

Bravo, Angelique! That's exactly the tone I got and contributes to the reason I didn't post when I first read it because it pissed me off! I took the same attitude as WH perceiving it as an attack on the damsel in distress.

When I had cooled off, I tried to respond in a bit more civil fashion the my first "Fuck off and die" reaction. Those responses, however intellectually based they may be, are seldom the most well received criticisms.

I also tried to provide a touch of humor in pointing out that the dues for membership are quite reasonable. Perhaps that wasn't received as well as I had hoped.
