Computer technology eliminates jobs that are easy to learn. It creates careers that are difficult to learn. It makes it possible for people with genius level IQs to become billionaires.

The Black Death permanently changed the economy in Europe, as there simply weren't enough warm bodies to farm. Hundreds of thousands of arable farmland laid fallow, and as a stopgap measure using that land to graze cattle changed European diets forever, as meat became a staple on the average person's table.

Nobody ever figured out how the Black Death never took hold among ethnic Polish and Hungarian populations, despite their continued trade with other affected nations....they simply were immune to the plague at some genetic level. In theory, this should have led to the rise of two new authentic ruling powers in Europe, but short-sighted nobility chose not to vary from rapidly archaic social norms.

In western Europe, Jewish ghettos were far less affected as a population than other areas, so naturally the general public convinced themselves that the Jews were the cause of the plague. This is one aspect of the Black Plague that has been studied in depth, and the conclusion was fairly obvious to any modern researcher: Jews simply had higher standards of personal hygiene compared to other European demographics.

Of course not. In fact, without immigration the labour force of the USA (and some other countries) would be declining, or at best static. The reasons usually cited for income inequality are not immigration, but the reasons I referenced above.

The same goes for housing: nimbyism, increasing construction costs (ironically, since immigrant labour supplies construction workers, restricting immigration reduces new housing construction!), corporate landlords and so forth are the reasons for increasing costs of housing.

Everybody wants to blame immigrants for something, going back as far as the Know-Nothings in your country, or even as far as the Navajos!

I like immigrants. I like the cultural diversity they contribute to our society.

I like immigrants, but I realize that population growth, for any reason, has a depressing effect on average standard of living. When I say it has a depressing effect, I mean that even when the average standard of living is rising, as it was in the United States from the end of the Second World War to the inflationary recession of 1974, the average standard of living would be rising more if the population was not rising. The average standard of living would be rising even more if the population was declining, as it was in Europe during the Black Death.
