[NFL] playoffs!

there's been a lot of virtual ink spilled on the OT system, but ultimately, the cost of change in sports is high. i've seen a lot of people recommend adopting the NCAA method, but that runs into some fairly serious problems, as infinity mentions.

that was a really fun pair of games yesterday! i'm glad that the saints are finally in the super bowl, and that manning is going back.

anybody wanna make a prediction re: the super bowl? :>

I like the idea of an NCAA style overtime for the NFL, but the ball starts on the 45 or 50 yard line so a team is basically forced to get at least 1 first down before going for a field goal.

I think Indy should win the SuperBowl. New Orleans is not the best team in the NFC and they got lucky last night. Of course, if New Orleans gets lucky again, they are certainly good enough to beat Indy.

I tend to agree.

Plus, in college OT, teams are required to start going for two-point conversions if they're still tied after the second OT. Why not require something like this right at the start of NFL OT?

I'm not a fan of the fact that NFL OT heavily favors the team who wins the coin toss, though as the Arizona-Green Bay game showed a couple of weeks ago, that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

A lot of regulation games run long as it is, anyway. Maybe if they'd do away with all the frickin' TV timeouts. . .

Those TV timeouts pay for you to watch the game, though. Getting NFL games doesn't come cheap. I'm sure they could do away with them if everyone were willing to pay $15 a game or so. ;)

I agree, although I wouldn't mind the idea of keeping the current OT system, except that if the team that gets the ball on offense first manages to score, they are forced to kick the ball off and the opposing team will then get at least one chance to win or tie the game.

So, how would you propose to handle overtime? Whatever idea you have, though, remember that it can't extend the game too long due to scheduling of other programs.

First team to 6 points would be good. Gives the team that losses the coin toss a chance if they can hold the other team to 3 points.

I am with Bailadora here.... I am a Saints fan. And I am not a Peyton Manning fan.... so that tells it all.

Why I do not like Manning?? It's not that i don't like him, he's a good QB but Brees has better stats this year yet you watch NFL network and who are they talking about?? they only have eyes for Peyton. why? you tell me why!

uh...could it be that he's the only player in league history to be the MVP 4 times, has already won a super bowl and statistics alone do not a QB make? :>

yeah I know but still, I find he gets too much attention..... Kinda like Brady did a few years back it was all about Tom but once they took away his some of his best players ( Bruschi, Vrabel and Harrison to name a few) he kinda falls flat.....
Now I suppose its only fair that the QB gets most of the attention when the team does good as most of the time they take the blame when it isn't peachy.

so anybody else wanna make a super bowl prediction?

me, i pick the colts. we can compare stats all the live long day, but against the vikes, NO needed OT to defeat a team that gave them the ball 6 times. that's a lack of killer instinct right there, IMHO. i see manning getting a super bowl MVP to go with his historic 4th league MVP award.

I'd pick the Colts, too. New Orleans is perfectly capable of beating the Colts though, especially without Freeney (sp?) at 100% (assuming he even plays).

Holy fuck! What a game! I wanna be on Bourbon Street right about now!

I was on Bourbon Street after the last game. It was quite the experience. I was quite taken by the Saints' fans.

I placed a bet with my boss. I put 5$ on the coin toss coming up heads and 15$ on the Saints winning the SB... my boss now owes me 20$ and I, finally, have bragging rights he can just NEVER take away from me!
