I think one of the reasons why he is not super tightly wound is because of what you mentioned in your previous post, and what Netz mentioned. He can laugh at himself when needed. That's a big deal. I think that anyone driven enough to hit national office like that is going to be tightly wound. Hell, the fact that he was bothered by that fly in the first place illustrates it. But, and this is an important but, he can back off of that tightness.

She also represents something that BHO never had. A strong, stable, loving, intact, nuclear family, existing within a close-knit extended family and clearly defined cultural group. I think he looks to her to see how that's done.

i agree with JMo, i don't see Obama as tightly wound at all. to the contrary, he seems very cool and collected, and i can't tell you what a comfort it is to have a level-headed, clear thinking president!

i can however see how some folks could read him as a bit buttoned-down or uptight. many folks who don't know any better have described my Master in the same way. for some, authoritative, composed, direct + laidback is a difficult mix to fathom.

Her husband was being interviewed and he was asked what she was like at home and he basically said "this is going to sound wrong, but kind of brain-dead. All her interest in making decisions shuts off and things like what to eat and where to go fall on other people."

That made total sense to me. After a certain point having to make really intense decisions without flagging or failure needs a rest.

True, and normally I wouldn't start this conversation for fear of pissing many people off. BUT, in my rather enlightened opinion, if you don't get dogs then you have no business owning a dog. And the fundamental thing with dogs is figuring out who's running the show, and it's a hell of a lot easier to say to a dog, "I'm in charge here and you are going to do absolutely everything I tell you to." than it is to get a person to understand all that.
