OK. I'll jump right in. Why is rape given special status as a crime?

Read the thread. I’m not linking posts for you. Give me feedback on my stories if you want that sort of quid pro quo.

Rape is different because it’s an attempt at dominating someone else. It’s a terrible weapon that has been used to keep women “in line”.

The tragedy is that the injury is not immediately visible. You may think that a person is aloof, but they just find it difficult to trust anyone.

I think it's because it's sadistic. It's not only violatory but apathetic towards the victim. They don't care about you and your wants and needs at all, and they make that explicitly clear in the action they force on you. They're not even doing it because they want to hurt you, they're doing it because they don't care if you're hurt.

Hope this helps...
Sorry. What you describe doesn't amount to major, life changing trauma to me.

We cannot ultimately get you to accept our ideas. Just trust us, please. If not us, someone like the protagonists of the popular realistic movie on the subject “The Accused”. Or the popular tv show “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”. If you still think rape isn’t traumatizing after watching a few episodes of the latter show… I have no idea how to get the concept across to you short of actually forcing you to experience it. And my personal ethics won’t let me do such a terrible thing.

Ok. I'm in Europe and whilst people would gag, the law doesn't get involved (largely from the historical perspective of not wanting a policeman in everyone's bedroom).

That's not the case everywhere in Europe. There was a highly publicised case in Germany about ten years ago between two siblings; it began when the sister was under-age but they continued the relationship after she was an adult, and both of them were charged for acts after that.

The relevant German law (see section 173):

(1) Whoever has sexual intercourse with a descendant by blood incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or a fine.

(2) Whoever has sexual intercourse with a blood relative in the ascending line incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or a fine; this also applies if the familial relationship has ceased to exist. Natural siblings who have sexual intercourse with each other incur the same penalty.

(3) Descendants and siblings do not incur a penalty under this provision if they were under 18 years of age at the time of the act.

I can't vouch for its accuracy or completeness, but on the face of it, looks like direct-line incest and sibling incest between consenting adults is illegal in quite a few countries in Europe. (Funnily enough, Ireland has a loophole that allows homosexual incest - I'd guess that law was drawn up when homosexuality was still illegal.)

It doesn't have to, for you, as long as you can accept that for many other people it is.

There are a lot of things I can't empathise with that are important to other people. I don't get being devoted to a sports team (which, let me tell you, is not a popular opinion around these parts!) But I can see that it matters to other folk, and I respect that as I hope to have my own feelings respected.

The title of this thread, and the original post, are a textbook example of a Motte and Bailey rhetorical tactic. Someone who wants attention says something ridiculous, and when people call them out on it they retreat to a more defensible position. This thread wasn't about the actual crime of rape. It isn't even about Lit stories. It's about attention.

This woman is a sociopath. She is not engaging genuinely with any of you. All these "I don't understand your response" posts, and "Is no one capable of answering my question?" posts. These are geared to engage you for attention. It doesn't matter what you say, or how sound your reasoning is, or how grueling your personal experience was. For more examples of this, see her responses in my thread. She asked for feedback, dismissed all of it, and used us to put her work (read: her) in front of as many eyes as possible.

Her writing makes so much sense as the product of an attention-starved sociopath. Do not engage with her. She is not listening to you; she craves your indignancy, and your outrage.

Ignore her.

I remember that case, funnily enough, and IIRC the German state were moved to action by either the threat or the reality that the siblings were going to have offspring. Which doesn't mean that it wasn't illegal anyway, but that that was the trigger for the law to actually be applied rather than lie gathering dust on the statute book.

I gave her the benefit of the doubt until she went from "no, this was a question about comments about rape in the forum" to "but, yeah, don't get why no one can explain why irl rape us a big deal" in the space of two responses. That gave her game away, afaic

I want to apologize for this reply: "Sorry. What you describe doesn't amount to major, life changing trauma to me." At least you addressed my question about what makes rape different instead of berating me for asking it. I'll add it to my collection of reasons people have for their attitude toward rape, even though I can't get my head around caring about what a rapist does or doesn't think about you.

@AG31, I get that you’re new to the internet but there is absolutely no need for you to link to your thread posts in the same thread they’re posted in. And rarely in any other thread either.

I want to know how one becomes a "professional sloth." That sounds like a great gig.

It's also a far more interesting subject than this thread has become, at this point. You and some others have said all there is to say about it.

Lol.
It's more of an aspirational title, at least until I magically win Powerball without buying any tickets.

(Though, honestly, I changed it when I was going through a hard time earlier in the year and felt pretty shitty about a lot of things)

Professional slothdom is a postgraduate level degree offered only by the Russel group Universities.

Slothdom as a whole is a broad subject, but the specialisation around the profession hinges on some critical pillars.

1. you must be a top-tier procrastinator. If there's a competition for procrastination, you are expected to not even enter
2. you must have a wardrobe comprising at least 37% oodies. Knowing why 37% is the critical factor is grounds for disqualification as a professional sloth, because it implies you've applied yourself to mathematics.
3. hygiene is non-negotiable, but should be strictly curtailed where possible. Don't be rank, but conversely good enough is good enough.
4. You should not aspire to anything higher than the Hallmark channel.

OK, how'd you get ahold of my resume/CV?

(Though my wardrobe is more yoga pants and oversize t-shirts than hoodies)

Sorry about the hard time. I hope things are better. You are very much appreciated here.

As far as aspirational titles--I know all about that. Mine, after all, is "Aspiring Kinklord."

Erudite and completely ridiculous. I like it.

Something positive may come of this thread, after all.

Some additional notes-

- If you make too many films on the Hallmark Channel, you lose your qualifications. Same if your films have too much plot and not enough Deus Ex machina.

- My cat had this title until recently. Then his food dish got empty and he started begging for more.
