"One Night in XXX” Story Event: Official Support Thread

Some guy built the first new drive in I've heard of in decades about 20 miles from where I live. So many memories. I hope it survives.

Are you guys talking about drive-in diners or drive-in theaters? There's a lot of drive-in diners around here, but no drive-in theaters. There are the ruins of one a half-mile or so from my house and I think that's the only one in the area that hasn't been redeveloped.

Ahhh, drive-ins. I fear we may all be showing our age in this story event. I have a song from the 1960's, hippie girls with flowers in their hair, and a Jimi Hendrix concert. Thus my angst and concern that 90% of Lit readers won't have a clue about what's going on  But drive-ins, now that is probably really going to stump them :D
Consider it part of your duty to educate the young. I have taken to informing my young beta reader that libraries are good, what books are, how records work; and Miss Tzang was (wait, she's now Mrs Tzang) - she was most appreciative for my cultural guidance into Australian rock music from before she was born. She also knows about utes and panel-vans, now. If we don't educate these young folk, they'll know nothing at all. The internet might be there, but unless you know what you're looking for, and which bits aren't bullshit, it's actually useless. Now, where's my hammer. I see another machine (let's see how many get that) ;).

Theatres. Drive-in diner never occurred to me although I can't think of one around here anymore.

I take that back. White Spot has a couple of them attached to walk ins, although I don't know if they're still serving?

It's a two way street. I can't tell you how many times those young whippersnappers have sent me off goggling something I've never heard of.
(let's see if they get that reference) :D

I confess, Urban Dictionary is my friend.

You'd have been the straight girl, keen to get inside one, but safer drinking your milkshake at a table near the beach kiosk. Speaking of an education - Puberty Blues (the book, and the original movie).

Aren't you the Wise Guy ;) Asking questions only a certain person who drinks coffee with monkeys can answer. Wait a minute; is she implying she's drinking coffee with us  Nooo, surely not.

Anyway, I have to embarrassingly admit that my mind instantly went back into memories of the drive-in movie...A place where I saw my first bare breast on the big screen...actually, I think it was before I ever saw any bare breast period. Quite exciting as I recall...and all in the privacy of the car

Drive-in cinema? I wrote an episode of a student sneaking around a drive-in theater, peeping on in-car sexual activities, including of relatives. A period piece, obviously. And I seem to recall a circa 1960 Mad Magazine spread on boat-in theaters, with floating restrooms signed for Buoys and Gulls. I can envisage a digital-era drive-in as a flash-mob in a parking lot leeching a bootleg WiFi signal on their tablets and laptops.

Translation: I have no story yet. But I have time.

I assumed CWM was talking about a drive-in diner, because drive-in theaters are essentially non-existent now.

We have lots of drive-in diners. Sonic is a national chain, and I think there's another but I can't remember the name. Bob's Burgers is a local chain, Hurricane's is one-of-a-kind. I'm sure there are others.

Even we now have drive in burgers. Hesburger (I think, not going to check the exact name) with several stations and one smaller venue, probably. For us that's a concept seen in movies, but introduced in the nature only in twenty first century. And, while I don't know anyone who had ever used one (or eaten anything with a '-burger' in name for that matter, after the short novelty crisis of late nineties) I have witnessed in more than one occasion that it occasionally happens in principle, and apparently they survive. As do Macdonald for that matter, as absurd that is.

Drive in cinema? That's something so uniquely absurd only a certain culture at certain time was able to create.

Only the Monkey Whisperer knows for sure :D As Hypoxia noted, it could be a 'period piece'. I could have had my One Night characters drop into a drive-in movie after the Hendrix concert. But the night was growing short and they had other "things' to do ;)

I’d have been the one running over the roof wearing stilettos and going “hey guys, hold my cooler and watch this.....”

Note to self: do not mention embarrassing party episode involving trampoline and stilettos. I had to be freed....

I'm sure you said, "Let me struggle a while," your heels conveniently far apart and the skirt riding pleasantly high...

There's supposed to be more than 300 drive-in theaters left in the United States.

Skowhegan Drive In is still open. I had some great times there. Even saw a few minutes of movie now and then.

Uniquely absurd ... as cinematic experiences, absolutely. On the other hand, where else could I, as a teenager, go and neck (old definition, not current one) with my girlfriend, certain that the cops wouldn't tap on the window of the car? *smile*

Drive-in movies were my parents' idea of a good time. They packed the back seat with pillows and blankets and expected my sister and I to go to sleep. That usually worked. The last movie I can remember seeing in a drive in was Cleopatra (1963), with Burton and Taylor. I think I saw all of that one.

When I first moved here, the disreputable neighborhood I lived in was centered around an old drive-in theater called La Mesa. It was still there in 1977, but it was dismantled and redeveloped within a year or two.

The one near where I live now was named Sunset. I think it's still there but it's hard to find. The entrance sign is obscured by trees and the screen itself isn't noticeable from major streets. It is visible from a trail along an irrigation ditch, and that's the only reason I noticed it.

The county had a plan to redevelop the property, but that fell through. The county's plans usually fall through.

Drive-ins, that brings back memories, fond memories.

I actually used a night I had at a drive-in and what led up to it happening, in a story. What happened at the drive-in was true, what happened after the drive-in was fiction.

I'll have to find it and post it here.

The year was 1968...

In this case, I do mean the drive in movie. We still have a local drive in and I'm glad we do! Like some of you I have fond memories of going to the drive in when I was in high school.

And y'all aren't the monkeys, unless you wanna be :D
When I made this account I was sitting drinking coffee that morning like I always do, and had my 'monkey' sitting next to me, like he usually is.
My monkey is actually a chimpanzee. A stuffed chimpanzee. I got him when I was around 3 or 4 so he's nearly 50. He is a he, according to my 3 or 4 year old mind and his name is Judy, again don't question my 3 or 4 year old brain, hehehe. Ever since I got him I've called him Judy Monkey. I was young and didn't know the difference between monkeys and chimps.
Some of you might remember these stuffed chimps. They got popular when we sent a chimp in space. He's black and yellow fur(that has long since been worn away) and has a plastic face, hands and feet. Some people find him frightening. He always goes with me when I travel. He flies with me in my carry on and one of the last times I flew I got searched by TSA once they saw him. They opened my bag and asked me What is that? I said it's Judy Monkey.
I have pictures of Judy sitting at the top of the Space Needle when we were there last August :D

I for one, will gladly surrender my role as "monkey"over to Judy. Actually, that was a very intimate and interesting recounting of how Judy came to be your coffee buddy. But, I'm actually very relieved to learn of her...I didn't sleep well last night thinking I might be one of the monkeys who amuse you as you drink your coffee while reading the AH posts

I went down a rabbit hole somewhere. My erotic thriller about an Iranian girl fleeing her father with an American guy she met in Dubai has somehow morphed into a dry treatise on labor rights. *SMH* Backing up and trying again.

I kinda feel like I'm off track, again, or something is wonky, but I'm just going to keep going and see what happens I guess.
I'm rambling. I feel like the story isn't progressing because I'm talking about the most boring stuff. I can't seem to find that fine line between enough detail and jesus christ I don't need to know that.
