To me group sex is sex on more equal terms; a bunch of people that have more or less regular sex together. In an orgy, I would say, you can have e.g. procured prostitutes which you use and abuse as you see fit.

Good question. I like @dallas_donna's take on this topic. And @carol_will said it best....orgy is like just sex parts. Group is is definitely more intimate, no matter how many partners. Group sex is almost like friends who agree to shed inhibitions and choose to please each other, in ways that others may not find conventional. Maybe you could say, whatever happened in your group, you trust each partner for discretion. In an orgy, you go all in, not knowing anyone.

As someone who has participated in both, I believe Suckonsimon, defined almost perfectly. The orgy is unplanned, no holds barred (with in reason and often their are more men than women, but my only addition to Suckonsimons description would be it can just as well be more women than men at times.
Group sex implies a somewhat or very organized group, usually knowing all participants, with a well understood set of rules and etiquette. I think of swingers and friends who gather for sex at specific times or planned if all desire for a reason or no reason at all.
Orgies are often so wild, one often does not know partners, sometimes one might be with several of the opposite sex on one woman or man and even some bisexuality is fairly common. At least in my experience. As I said previously no real set rules.

If all the guys are straight and directing all their attention toward the one girl, then this is a gangbang. Orgies have a many-to-many relationship, while gangbangs have a one-to-many relationship.

Having never indulged in either, from a purely theoretical standpoint I would think that group sex is more organized, even choreographed, with the men at some point for example forming a tight and interlocked circle........
