Definitions
I agree with Laura (and Jessica!) Both hit the nail on the head (wow sorry for the bad pun!).
For fun, charlie sheen's definition works pretty well here:
1= solo fun
2= couple
3= any 3some (mmf (yeah!) ffm, fff, mmm) all count
4= 2 couples (Any combonation of couples (mfmf, mmff, ffff, mmmm)
5= 2 couples and a LookyLou
6= ORGY

Ragingbull, this is only my thoughts. Other may think differently. I am only going by experiences and what others called them that made sense to me.
"Is a circle jerk an orgy?"..... No, but it is group sex. All the guys have to agree and probably have some rules.
"What if four couples have sex in the same room but don't switch partners... is that an orgy?" .....No, that is sort of group sex (no swapping), but is common with people curious about swinging or adding some exhibitionist/voyeurism to their lives. Sometimes called a single swing in some circles.
"Is a woman having sex with six men an orgy or a gang-bang?" ......Actually it can be both and can be more common than many might think, in these situations. I've been ganged up on at what I would call an orgy.
"Do threesomes count as an orgy?".... No. A threesome or a foursome is just that. get much over than and it might be a gang-bang.
" What if they are all of the same sex?" .......It's still a threesome, no matter if all the same sex or one or two is of the opposite sex.
An orgy, in my mind is often spontaneous, no set rules and pretty much anything goes. These are usually pretty wild and often happen out of a rowdy party where not everyone knows each other. I was at one where I knew one person, ...the guy who took me to it and it was not planned at all.
Group sex has a set of ground rules understood and agreed to by the participants and everyone usually knows the other well and swinging was already part of their life style in some form.
Both group sex and an orgy are group sex, but not all group sex is an orgy.LOL!
